I want to know if police are in my area and know how to get my scanner to tell me when police are going to be around here.

Your scanner will not tell you that, It will tell you if the police or talking and tell you were they or, If they or being sent to your area it will say were they or going to.

Scanner can't predict "when" police will be around. You may hear a call from your neighborhood and then you can expect them. If you need frequencies try www.radioreference.com and search for your area. If your police agency is on the standard VHF or UHF frequencies then you an monitor. If they're trunked or digital then you'll require a more sophisticated and expensive scanner.
