If this is a flip top there is a little button that shuts off the screen when it closes if that button is stuck you will hear the audio and see nothing try flipping that button and see if you can pull it up

If you look very closely, is there an extremely dark picture, or a solid black screen?
If it's an extremely dark picture, you just need a new backlight.
If it's a black screen, you either have a bad connection (broken, shorted or unplugged cable), or need a new LCD.

Im guessing that if you can hear sound but have no picture and this is newly installed that your unit is wired to your parking brake as a safety feature. You need to disconnect it and connect the wire to the radio ground to bypass it.
If its the red white and blue AV cable on both ends yes you can. If its a red white and blue AV on one end and a audio looking jack on the other end you can too. They sell all those cords at Radio shack or most electronic stores.
If the player is doing that for all DVDs but playing CDs properly, the player has gone bad due to either the laser and lens being out of whack or the DVD drive just doesn't recognise DVDs anymore and needs repaired or replaced.
