Lights on the usb and the controller flash rapidly when i hit connect but it fails to do anything. I put in brand new batteries and still nothing
1. Ask gifter/seller if it ever worked. If not, return it. What connect do you hit?
Sorry my first try was a bit curt. It looks like you're willing to do what it takes to fix it (investigate and try sensible things).
I suggest you make sure that you have both DHCP and WLAN services enabled in your operating system and then re-install the device. Is there any sort of connection utility in your PC? Often those conflict with the Windows Wireless utility, so I've found that unchecking "Let this tool control my wireless connection settings" and then checking the same option in Windows Wireless utility (available from the System Notification area icon by right-clicking on the little PC with radiant rings and selecting View Available Wireless Networks) and saving before attempting to find the connection in the list. Another common problem is a too-long list of access points, so by removing all others you have a better chance of connecting to the one you want. Otherwise I suggest uninstalling and re-installing. Be patient with networking; there is up to a 3-minute delay while all routers in your connection update after something changes.
To enable services in Windows (Mac OSX has something analogous), from a command prompt (invoked by Run with command "cmd" then services.msc (and permit UAC to allow this when it pops up if Vista).
Both DHCP and WLAN services must be running if you are to connect to an access point. Have you independently verified that your access point works? Try using another device on the same access point and if there is Security you'll need a passphrase to connect.
