First you must know which wires are hot from the breaker box and witch ones go to the device you are switching--lets call it a light bulb. The hot wires coming from the breaker should go where it says "LINE" black one on the "HOT" side and white one on the "White" side. One of the black wires hanging out of the switch should go on the "LOAD" "HOT" side of the switch, then attach the other hanging black wire to the black wire going to the light with a wire nut. Your white wire going to the light must go on the "LOAD" "WHITE" side or it just won't work.

I have a vintage leviton switch. you plug it in a 200 or a 125 watt receptacle and it has several outlets on the side where you plug in another electrical appliance, iron, radio, etc.. how old is this...

You can find relative values of collectible stuff by seeing what prices things are going for on ebay. I have no idea if anybody collects this kind of thing, but I am constantly surprised by what people collect. Try searching several different ways using the words switch, collector, collectible, antique, vintage, etc. good luck

We are trying to install leviton combination switch in the old building and just two wires are coming out from the wall. how do we connect them to the switch? thanks

By two wires if you mean just a black and white wire then this is a switch leg and you cannot use this switch at this location. All you have here is the power coming in on the black wire an leaving on the white wire. The switch just breaks the flow of electricity. An outlet cannot be used here because there is no neutral wire. This is how a switch leg is wired. a8179fb.png

Leviton 8299 Combination Switch / Smart lock GFCI Outlet Leviton-

power coming in from the breaker box: black wire will go to line-hot screw, and the white wire will go to the line-white screw. the switch wires coming out of the back of the gfci- 1 will go to the load-hot screw & the other black wire will wire nut to the black wire going to the light. the white wire going to the light must go to the load-white screw.

The wires in the fixure are not color coded

Taking into account the category you posted in I will assume you are trying to hook up a light fixture, if that is the case a light is like a fuse when you connect the two wires you are actually making a short from one wire to the other, with that being said even though the National Electrical Code says the wire connected to the outside of the bulb (screw in part) is the neutral (white) and the center connector is hot (black). You could hook it up backwards and not damage anything.

If you are working on a switch, it's simple. A switch is just a continuation of a circuit. Simply if you put the two wires going to a switch together whatever you had connected to it would come on, therefore placement of those wires is not important.

Hope I helped...
