The ink snaps pretty hard into this unit. Make sure take the little clear tape off of the bottom of your ink cartridge. Open the fax machine, if there is already an ink cartridge there, you have to pop it out. Pull it from the top colored part of the cartridge. Take your new cartridge with the side with the number on it facing you, and just push it in. It's easy, it just might seem like it's not going in right because it is kind of hard, you have to push it a bit to get it to snap in.

Want to change it to black and white printing only.

A manual for your fax is available here, and will show you how to set your fax to monochrome mode.

I have an HP 2140 fax purchased one year ago. I have never replaced the catridge and have used the fax about once a month. Today I am trying to copy and it won't print. I cleaned the nozzle and still...

New cartridge wouldnt print but sounded like it was printing. You can check ink levels clean or align cartridge by pushing menu then tools. I cleaned contact points w qtip and alcohol. What seemed to work is putting alcohol on cartridge where ink is released and putting back into machine wet did this three times first time little dots of ink then a faint print and now it is printing must have been dried ink further then I could access.

Just changed the ink cartridge and does not print

If it was working before you changed the cart make sure you removed any sealing tape on the new one. If you have then you likely have a bad cart.

Refilled ink

Try checking under maintenance or ink settings, sometimes if the cartridges have been refilled they are not reset correctly and the ink level checking fails to work. There is sometimes and option to ignore these for refilled or compatible cartridges.

Control Panel
--> Printers and Faxes
--> Right Click on the Printer ICON and select Properties
--> Look for a "Maintenance" or "Tools" Tab across the top click one
--> Look for an option for "In" or "Ink Settings"
and click on one of these options to run

If you cannot find that then Try going into Control Panel
--> Printers and Faxes
--> Right Clicking on your printer
--> Look for a "Maintenance" or "Tools" Tab across the top click one
--> Look for an option for "Cleaning" or "Deep Cleaning"

You need a toner cartridge which includes the drum. Go to a store like Staples, they will have what you need.
