Question about Stanley Garden
If it is a screw drive like mine all I needed to do was lube up the screw with a product called "fluid film" and all was ok. The screw was binding making the sensor think the door was blocked and it would go back up.

You can also get remote units that connect to the same terminals that you would hard wire a button to. You really do want a later remote, as they all now use rolling code technology. Essentially you have to "invite" a remote and the unit and remote agree on a code. From that time on, the code changes every time that you use the remote (automatically, you do nothing). Way better security, and a guy cannot just run a frequency generator and open your door.

The most important thing is to understand that the door spring can KILL YOU. If you are not absolutely certain that you know what you are doing, call a garage door guy. Many poeple get SERIOUSLY hurt.
So, you need two perfectly fitting rods to fit into the spring tightening end of the spring..
Release all spring tension. Release the opener.
Level the door with shims if necessary.
Install the first cable and turn the spring main rod to hold tension.
Put a vice grip on the main rod to keep it from unwinding any more
Release the 2nd cable spool and thread the other side cable. Turn the spool to have the same tension as the other cable.
Then wind the spring about 6 revolutions. (35 flats or tool insertions).
Verfiy the cable is still threaded correctly on both sides.
Correct spring tesnion is when the door will stay at 1/2 closed.
REconnect the opener and good to go.

Make sure the counter balance springs are ok. Most garage doors have 2 springs to provide counter balance for the door. Your garge door opener may have enough power to still operate even with one springs broken however with one springs broken would hit pretty hard. It the springs look ok I would release the door from the opener (while in the down position) using the little rope that hangs down and operate the door by hand to ensure it goes up and down smoothly. Most problems are due to friction caused by bad rollers or failed springs. If this is not the issue let me know.
Hope this helps

Not great info, but there are links to email the remnants of the Stanley Garage Door company (the companies using the Stanley name went bankrupt), as well as some links for parts.
There is also this link for Stanley Garage Door manuals from the page above: http://www.aaaremotes.com/stowma.html

This may be just a matter of adjusting the safety limit switch rheostat at the rear of the opener motor. Here is the full set of instructions for proper adjustment.
Adjust garage door opener when your door is not working properly. There are certain components of your garage door opener that need adjusting to ensure that your door functions safely.
Things on Your Garage Door Opener That Need Adjustment
Turn the adjustment screw on the limit clockwise if the door doesn't fully close.
To open the door completely, adjust garage door opener by turning the limit counterclockwise.
Step 2-How to Adjust Garage Door Opener Force
If your door doesn't rise at least five feet when it is suppose to be opening, hold the bottom of the garage door while it is lowering. This will adjust the open force. For a door that doesn't reverse while closing hold the door as it opens to adjust the down force.
Step 3-Adjust the Safety Reverse
Use a piece of wood to stop and reverse the door, if the door doesn't reverse increase the down limit with a clockwise, one quarter turn.
