My LaCie 160 GB external HD, icon failed to appear on my HD when I turned on computer one morning. It had been operating the previous day. It also disappeared from my ALL Program LIst. The light was lit on the unit which became warm. I tried disconnecting the power unit in my computer for five minutes, which was offered as a possible solution , It did not heldp. Another solution offered was to change the housing of the computer HD. but I do not think the cause likes there, as I have two computers and neither recognizes it . [email protected]

click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb but its not working

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

I have 2 lacie external hard drives that no longer work. They power up and I can hear it working, but they are not reconized on any computer.

Chances are, the IDE/SATA to USB/Firewire controller inside the device has died. You can take the case apart and take the hard drive out, and plug it directly into a computer through IDE or SATA, whichever it is. If the drive is recognized, then all you need is another external case to put the drive into. If it isn't recognized then most likely the powerboard on the hard drive or some other internal mechanical part is dead, and you would need professional data recovery to get anything off of it that you would want.

How can I open a LaCie B350 External Hard Drive?

You can carefully pry the bottom off with a screwdriver and remove the drive.  No problem using a "USB to IDE/SATA cable" ( Here's the first hit on Google: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002  Worth $20. ) to copy off your data.  Or you could mount in your desktop PC.

First time trying and i cannot access my data. This is the first time I tried to pull it up.

USB is very finnicky. Shut off your computer and external drive. Unplug the USB cord from one end (which ever is easiest). Turn on your computer. When windows is up, plug in USB cable. Turn on USB drive. Windows should recognize the USB ox and drive and attach the extra drives. But, you must have windows millenium or newer. Or you will need USB drivers for the external USB box.

Dead hard drive

Try unplugging the usb connector and plugging it back in. Your pc shouls recognize the installed component automatically. Also, some external hard drives work like normal pc's do: hold the power button in longer until something happens. Hope this helps.

LaCie Design by F. A. Porsche 160 GB not showing on MacBook Pro

The first thing that I would do is try connecting the drive to different USB Ports. If that does not work see if there is any software that came with the drive or that you can download from the internet that you might need to get the drive working. Next I would connect it to a different computer to see if it works that way. If it works when connected to a different computer I would at least get the files on to that computer and transfer them to the computer that you need them on using a network connection, a CD/DVD, or a USB thumb drive.
