You will need to remove the fan first. Usually, if its a stock intel fan, there are 2 clips that lift up, then you will need to pry the edges out of the notches. Once you get the fan off, there is a little metal bar you will lift up to open the cpu holder and release the pins. Then lift the cpu up out of the socket.
Do you have the recovery disk on the computer , you may have it if you have WinXp and you purchased the brand name computer. You may also try to run the repair CD if the recovery didn't work.
I am not sure about the older systems , you would probably require a boot disk to boot from the CD and try to reinstall the windows. The problem could be operating system mostly as sound to me from your information , but you never know until you reach the problem by more diagnostics on the computer. Harddisk, or motherboard could have possibly gone bad.
