The LG RH397D only supports MP3/WMA/JPEG/DivX image and audio files from a USB drive. There is no firmware update that changes the supported file types. You will need to convert the MP4 to a supported format. The manual for the RH397D is available from LG: http://www.lg.com/au/support-product/lg-RH397D# /
Here is your users manual. It's a PDF that will download onto your PC when you click the right side of the page where it says "video manual English." Even though it says video manual it is a text manual in PDF. I just downloaded it, scanned it and opened it so it is a good manual.
Your DVD drive is having a problem. When this recorder starts, it checks the DVD drive for correctness. If incase your DVD drive is has problem in the ejecting mechanism then this will prevent your HDD from working correctly. Take the player to service center and fix the drive
There are two things are likely that can cause this: media and copyright protection. If you use DVD-RW or DVD-RAM, you should be able to copy shows ONE time onto the DVD. If you use DVD+RW, or DVD+R, it may issue a copy protection message just before it stops recording. If the media is bad, it can also cause the machine to stop recording, I believe. You could put it into a PC and try erasing the contents before re-trying to use it in the DVD recorder. tom
the manual specifies that if you select for recording the FR mode the machine automatically adjusts the recording mode for the program to fit on a 4.7G dvd. If you use a dvd DL if will auto detect that you have this type of dvd and the FR mode will automatically allow you to make full use of the available space. Depending on the space needed on the dvd the picture quality will be good to excellent (refer in the manual to Recording Modes..)
