Drive not showing up on my Mac

I am having the problem of whenever I plug my drive in, it doesn't show up al all on my Mac. When I plug the firewire in, the blue light blinks a little bit, but that's all. I it possible that the wire is defective?

Help! I have a Fanthom external drive and a iomega portable ext drive that does not show up on my screen. They both use to show up on my mac Ibook and now they don't. I used the ibook ext drive for awhile then one day it just stop showing up on the screen so I bought the Fanthom and the same thing eventually happened. My operating system is 0SX.ver. 10.3.9. I did go into the system profile and when click firewire, the Fanthom shows up when it's plugged in but still soesn't show up on the desktop.
    Any ideas? Alex

It's possible. Has it worked before? Does it work on other computers? If it has worked, has it worked on this computer before? Can it be connected via USB (some externals have both) and does it work that way? Can you hear the drive spinning when it's powered on? On your mac, open up a terminal (maximize the window), plug in your drive and type this in the terminal dmesg This will output a ton of stuff, but the last 20 lines or so should be relevant to the last event, namely, connecting your drive. Copy that text to here and we'll take a look at what's going on. If you're feeling adventurous, you could take it out of the external case, mount it in your tower, and see if it's visible that way. Do NOT try this unless you know what you're doing. It's possible to really mess up your system. But if you've been in the case before and are comfortable with installing drives, this could be worth a shot.
