DVD produces a great picture with sound - but the VCR is not producing a picture? is it snowy? or a black screen? if it is a black screen, the video output from the VCR is possibly faulty, this is not economical to repair. If it is just snow, and there is slight evidence of a playback picture from your tapes, try cleaning the video heads with a head cleaning cassette (available from eBay and electronics stores as a discontinued stock item).
Since Hi-Fi VCRs have the left and right stereo track on their head drums, and this drum becomes worn or dirty, the sound deteriorates along with the picture - mono sound usually with lots of snow.
This is a combo unit - it has a VCR/DVD common output section on the rear - allowing DVD and VCR pictures to be viewed when the respective drive is selected. When you checked your input connection, did you check the rear of the unit? you may have connected 'DVD priority out' instead of the VCR/DVD common out. If you did connect the common out, and still have no VCR picture, try the head cleaning suggestion as above. If that fails, consider replacing the unit as a last resort.
I am offering this suggestion 'gratis' -
free of charge.
If you have used the VCR a good bit, the drum may need cleaning.
VCRs derived their synchronization from the recorded tape and if the heads are contaminated, the sync signal may not be getting through often enough to stabilize the tracking.
This is not a fun thing to do but I once serviced these and it can be done with care and cure the problem.
You will need cotton swabs and (preferably) some pure alcohol (not rubbing alcohol).
Gaining access to the drum requires removal of the housing and perhaps, in a combination unit even more, keeping mind that both of the decks works with astoundingly small signals; relatively low voltage signals and an amazing precision in the mechanisms.
If you can gain access to the drum, do NOT ever touch the shiny surface of it with fingers since the oil on the skin can really screw things up.
You can rotate the drum with a finger on the top of the drum and hold your alcohol wetted swab gently against it while rotating the drum.
If the drum is the cause of the problem, you should see some dark deposits build on the swab.
If fibers catch in the opening for the heads, you will have to rotate it in the other direction while holding a tissue gently against the drum; no fibers from anything should remain snagged on the drum, otherwise your efforts will be for nought.
Good luck-
If you are using an antenna put your antenna connector into the rear of the VCR & then using a connecting cable (RF flylead), take this fron the other socket at the rear of the VCR & connect this to the antenna connector on the TV, you will then have to tune the TV to the VCR. Select channel zero for example on the TV, insert & play a tape, & then tune the TV in until it picks up the video playback picture then store this channel on the TV settings. Alternatly, do as above only use a Scart cable & connect this from the rear of the VCR to the AV connection on the rear of the TV, then when you wish to use the VCR channel, select the AV option on the TV.
Such a simple job. First check if the cables are connecred properly 1. Audio OUT from VCR to AUDIO IN of TV. 2. Video OUT from VCR to VIDEO IN of TV
Then switch the TV ON. Select 'Video' on the TV/Video selection button on the TV's remote control. Your TV screen will show a display like 'Video' or 'AV' Play a cassette and you should be able to see the picture... Happy Viewing.
Connect your Direct TV to the Ant. In connection on your VCR. When you want to watch TV, just tune the TV to channel 3 (or whatever channel the Receiver is set for). When you wish to record, set your VCR to that same channel and set your TV to the channel that your VCR outputs to. For simplicity sake, I would suggest setting both systems to channel 3 and just watching your program through the VCR. If you are still using an "off air" antenna, then connect that antenna to the ANT. IN connection on your Direct TV receiver and when you turn off the dish, it will pass the signal through just like the VCR would.
Hello..try to turn on the test signal generator switch it is marked test at rear of vcr...and chose av¨rf channel on your tv i.e the 0 or 9 channel than search for the vcr and memorize on tv...alt you can playback a tape ..pre-recorded without the test signal and make the search...alt 2...use a direct av-cable between vcr and tv..which is best and put tv in av mode...good luck...Ron
If its the original remote for the VCR then NO there is no reprogramming for that device as its built in. You may need a new remote and its available at http://www.remotes.com
Sounds like a problem in your VCR IF what your saying is when the screen goes dark and you turn off the VCR then the screen on the tv returns to normal?? Does this happen with the vcr on and the tape not playing?? No Ok you have a problem in the video processor Ic or the circuit but most likly the IC as Ive seen this already twice in a toshiba VCR. No if it happens even when the VCR is on but the tapes not plying and the vcr is sitting, and the screen fades The problem is the on screen disply IC in the vcr. seen this a dozon or so times already. Vcrs no a days are not worth the money to invest Unless you got a really good one from the past, BUT you can by a good on for these times for well under 100 bucks . Good Luck
