Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

My kelvinator upright freezer stopped freezing and it just kicks on and kicks right back of what could be wrong with it?

Start Relay/Overload or Compressor is bad. A bad compressor can make a Start Relay/Overload go bad but the only way to find out if compressor or Start Relay/Overload is bad is to replace the Start Relay/Overload if it starts and stays running you fixed it if Prob. returns in a week or so or if you have the same Prob. after replacing the relay the compressor is bad.

Freezer motor cuts in and out. Runs for about thirty seconds at a time. Now have red low temp light on and everything is defrosting. Sides of freezer used to be very warm and are now cold.

Good day,
Some kind of compressor problem. If it will run a true 30 seconds then it is either the start relay mounted on the side of the compressor hanging up and not releasing after the compressor starts or the main windings in the compressor are starting to short, causing the compressor to draw too much current followed by the protective overload shutting the compressor down.
The relay is pressed onto the compressor pins and can be removed.

A parts house should be able to test it for you. If bad, replace. If it tests good then the problem is internal to the compressor and would need the attention of a qualified tech.

P.S. If the unit is under 5 years of age, leave it alone and call for factory service. It may or may not be covered but if so it would be necessary to preserve the balance of the 5 year warranty.

Have power and light. can't hear compresser run

could be a bad start relay or start cap. could be a bad compressor. if you have an electric meter you can test the ohms of the compressor and that can tell you if the windings are good, however it cannot tell you if the piston is locked. if you have a locked rotor condition and bad starting components you will not be able to tell until you replace the bad starting components and test run. if it hums and draws lots of amps its locked rotor. most compressors will tell you RLA and LRA amperage, LRA is locked rotor amps, RLA running load amps

The compressor works for a few seconds but then stops. The freezer is over temperature.

Check the condenser fan motor (next to compressor) make sure it is running. Next change relay (inside black box) on compressor.

Freezer attempts to start but after a few seconds trips out

There is a relay and protector, these are where the wires attach to the compressor,or rather how the power wires attach to the compressor. You can purchase a 3n1 start kit which has the instructions with it. Be sure to unplug the freezer before touching the wires or attempting to install replacement parts.

Problem with upright freezer not freezing

It sounds like the unit is low on freon or the compressor is going bad. You have several other components that could be affecting this as well. Make sure the coils are free from dust and clean underneath. This is a bit premature for you to have problems now, especially since it is a Sears product.

Kenmore freezer not cold at all!

We had a Kenmore upright which worked fine but then suddenly was not keeping food frozen. Long story short, do not store anything on top of the freezer unit. It will insulate the coils that run across the top of the unit, and cause your compressor to work harder than it needs to, and eventually overheat and become ineffective. Says nothing about it in the user manual. We learned the hard way by losing food.
