Re:
Generally speaking if the system cannot "Find" the CD/DVD then it has a hardware fault. OR the BIOS doesn't recognize any DVD's. If it is the latter then one may be able to "Upgrade" the BIOS, if the first.. then a New unit is only option.
Also check to make sure the drive "Jumper" is set to Master, if it is the only device on that Channel, if not then Slave.

Go to this link and scroll down to 'Entering System Setup' for complete directions and other useful information on what options are available under bios including resetting default bios settings. It's easier than me going through all the steps and you can save the document and / or link for future reference for your Dell machine, Please rem, ember to rate this if you found this useful. Incidentally anything less that a four thumbs up is not considered a solution. Good luck!
go to Dell.com and select suport an download.
enter the model number and the serial number or service tag (rear of the machine).
you should be able to get the original configuration of the machine. Provided that nothing has changed since it left the factory.
·I assume the OS is Windows XP. Please click the link below to see what Microsoft says. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305 ·Or you can use password recover software. There are a lot on the internet. ·Or a fresh Windows installation. You can download the drivers from Dell All the best!
Depending on the operating system, most of the time it is located in the start menu, programs, accessories, then system tools. Restore is a process that takes the computer back to a specific date and time called a checkpoint. Reformat is a process by erasing the entire hard drive and re installing the version of windows you are running.
