Gradually over the past few weeks an extra window appeared. Initially it showed up with some odd pattern, after a few minutes it would become a small replica of the main picture, then it would slowly rotate to the different quadrants of the screen. Then it would go away. Now, the funny pattern (looks like a noise pattern) appears as before but never moves or goes away. Have tried uning the PIP function to clear it up. No results. I took off the back and vacuumed it, then blew out any remaining dust. Nothing obvious. I suspect a temperature sensitive issue since initially the unwanted feature appeared and then went away after it warmed up.
You using a digital desk top box with it ?

remote may have a function button on /off for that

try bringing up the menu, and see if there's an option "factory default", and try that. you didn't mention what button on the remote you press to get rid of the popup, or what feature you are turning off to get rid of the popup,

Dear simon, Seems like a simple problem. In all likelihood, one of the Electrolytic Capacitors in the vertical Output stages has failed.It could also be a cold / dry solder, as symptoms seem to disappear when you tap the set. But, do not try anything thing at home. A proffessional Techie should fix it up in 15-20 mins. Definitely worth the spend.

Have you checked the aspect ratio?? May be that when the kids had the X-Box hooked up they simply changed the aspect to zoom.

This is a simple and common problem. The solder joints on the vertical output IC have cracked loose. I actually did a housecall on the exact same set with the exact same symptoms this morning! A good tech will resolder the pins of the vertical output IC and all other major solder joints on the main board and the set will play fine.
