Lightning struck a tree by our house and shorted breakers. we fixed the breakers but the controller to the rinnai system wont turn on at all. we fear we have a bigger issue because after the lightning hit we had to turn all the propane off because it started leaking in the house! We`re first time home owners and have no idea how this rinnai system works.
The rinnai is a computer that heats water. It is not ordinary water heater most people are familiar with, and repairs are not do-it-yourself, requiring a trained technician qualified in that brand who can diagnose both computer and water heater problems and plumbing problems.
Call rinnai for recommended local technician. Click on support tab. Note their webpage is very short on repair details, unlike companies that sell tank-type heaters... because tankless units are not do-it-yourself.

Problem might be simple blown glass fuse on circuit board or complete failure of computer and sensors.
Here is page written for Rheem tankless, that explains general complexity of tankless computers, and showing required maintenance, such as deliming each year:

To save problems with tankless computers plus anticipated expense of maintenance and repairs, I recommend homeowner install tank-type gas water heater:

Also install one-time-use whole house surge protector, and install grounding rods to prevent further damage... lightning frequently likes the same places over and again:

SOURCE: I need the manual for a Rinnai Infinity 26 hot water system
you can get it off the rinnai web site they have a spot on there to get the internet manuel,, but from what you are saying you may need to adjust the thermostat, or the temp, remember even though you will have endless hot water it still takes the smae amount of timed for the hot water to get to your faucet,, not only that make sure your shower heads aren't holding back to much water pressure, if you don't have enough water going thru the unit it will not stay lit, if will come on and go off, judt to dstisfy the unit,, make sure the filter is clear, on the cold side there is a cap screw if you take it off there is a screen in side you just pull it out and clean it and reinstal it,,
SOURCE: when I turn on the hot water the system goes bang
well check the pipes for any leaks see if you can smell any gas if so then call the gas company and have them come out and check it
SOURCE: i have a 50 gallon
If you're having to reset the breaker, then most likely you have a bad heating element. Usually the bottom element burns out first, however if you had the water off, and the level dropped in the tank, the heater might have come on without water in it. This will cause it to overheat and burn out. Now when you turn the breaker on, the current is going to ground, tripping the breaker. If you are handy you can replace them, but be sure water heater electric is off or disconnected, and then drain water below the element level. While you're replacing one element replace them both.
