Is this the U3 model? According to SanDisk's site, there is no driver required for it if it is the U3 model: http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item(2483)-SDCZ6-2048-A11ALZ-SanDisk_Cruzer_Micro_2GB_Purple.aspx

Yes you can burn a CD picking files directly from an external USB unit, providing that you have a computer with CD rewriter.
However it is always better to copy all drivers from flash memory into the internal hard drive, and then burn the CD from files copied into the HD. This because the Cruser flash driver has a longer data access time respect to the hard disk.
If your computer is good enough it should work either way.
Try your sandisk to other computer and if appearing same problems may it comes to conclusion that it was damage. maybe some circuit of your sand disk is damage or maybe your files cannot be access anymore but and most probably u can use your san disk if you goes to formatting.
Is the account that your tying to access the drive with an Administrator account? If not, Log in as Administrator and try to access the new drive. If you ARE using Administrator privileges on the vista machine, the problem lies in the U3 smart driver. Try downloading and installing the drivers for the XP SP2 os on scan disks website, If vista rejects the install package off of the scan disk website, let me know and i'll extract the drivers and build an install for them for you.
