Yes, it can be replaced, the map cartridge is a standard SD memory card.
These can be bought quite cheap in most camera/computer stores or in several department stores.
They can also be bought online from amazon See Here $6.65
Once you have the new card, connect the device to your computer. Open the TomTom Home application. Click on 'Update My Device'. This should then install the application onto the SD card. Alternativly, you could perform all the steps above without the SD card in the device, this will install the application onto the internal memory. Note: you may also need to install your maps, voices, etc after you update.

I need help on changing to the us My tom tom is on a different country

You will need to Purchase and load required US MAP(s) via 'TOM TOM HOME'.
When the new MAPs are registred to your device, you can then use the 'Change preference' -> manage Maps -> Switch Map -> then select the appropriate 'registred' US MAP.

Please note: always backup your GPS via 'Tom Tom Home' backup utilities first!
If you have limited storage, you may need to delete your existing map(s), that were previously back-up, before loading the US Maps

With the tt on and displaying the map, tap the bottom left side. At the bottom a slider bar will appear. Use your finger to adjust the volumn to your desired level. Another way is to tap the map screen, then tap change preferances, tap the arrow until you come to volumn preferances and change the volume setting there.

The red cross means its been wiped usually. Connect it to your pc and go to my computer. Click on the tom tom logo and see what is on your device. The maps should be there in yellow folders. Copy and paste these in to a folder. Then reformat the device by right clicking on the logo and selecting fat 32. When done reset the device for 30 sec and connect back to your pc and install the latest version of tom tom home. You can then get all the fee updates, thhen go to add maps where you can put your maps back on from the folder you made

Just a general question

What maps it comes with depends on where you buy it. I have an Australian version which includes maps for all of Australia and works fine. Tom Tom update the maps periodically but an update is about A$150. It will also work with any other Tom Tom maps you have.

Lost favorites when trying to update

There is no solution, and the manufacturer is not amenable to any news of this.

It used to be possible to remove the mapsettings.cfg file from the TomTom unit's maps before downloading and installing a new map, then to replace the file; however, TomTom changed the coding on the latest maps so that the software no longer recognises the old cfg file. There is a complex workaround where you change your favorites, one by one, into Points of Interest - but it seems pointless having a Favorites item when you have to do this.

Turn the tomtom on, and then press the reset button on the bottom of the unit with a paperclip. After the reset turn off the unit and then turn it back on. Make sure you have not dislodged the sd card from the unit.
