Earlier tonite we were printing successfully, then we heard a loud pop and since then it won't print anything. i think it is the cartridge carrier because it won't move back to the middle on its own like it normally does. i've tried the turning it on and off and the booklet says, no paper is jammed, don't know what else to try.

Re: printer won't print
I have had this problem with the X73 and many X85's.....
First unplug the power and move the carrier to the center. There is a thin (5mm) Mylar strip that is stretched from L-R behind the carrier. Using a flashlight make sure the strip has not slipped behind the sensor on the carrier. Gently lift the strip up and about 10mm and let it rest inside the "U" of the sensor.
If I have not described this properly please email [email protected] and I can send you some pics.

That happens all the times when first print job encounter a problem and stops printing and it was followed by series of print jobs. Some reasons for stop printing could be a printer out of paper and printer not set as default printer.
The best way to fix it is to cancel all pending jobs. When print jobs window is cleared off pending print jobs, restart your PC and your printer. Then go to your printer and make sure it is the default printer.
After that try printing a test page. Once a test page is successful, you can now print as many as you want.
the loud pop you heard was probably a capacitor blowing its top. The grinding noise is likely high voltage arching that was occuring due to rising voltage since capacitor isn't there to smooth it out.
Hi - I had a similar problem except my Brother printer wouldn't print any PDFs. I had Adobe Reader 11 installed at the time. I uninstalled then reinstalled a previous version - Adobe Reader 9 and that worked a treat!
Please follow the procedure your printer has which forces it printer to clean the print heads.
I have experience of other epson stylus models. I have previously spoken to epson about this exact problem. Repeating the head cleaning process a minimum 5 times cleared the problem.
Running head clean multiple times in succession builds up pressure in the print heads - causing (usually new) cartridges to work correctly.
kind regards
