Question about Shinco SDP-1750 Portable DVD Player

Display light is dark

The display monitor can be turn on when the power on, but the screen becomes dark after that. The image can still be seen but not bright enough. The light adjustment is not working.

    May I have some detail on the solution? Is it a component failure or cable issue?

    Without the schematic, it is hard to measure the voltage. I can not open the monitor cover even all screws are unscrewed. so the continuity of wires can not be measured. Very sad. Do you have any idea to continue the troubleshooting without schematic?

    Thanks.for your time to explain so detail to me. Sorry I didn?t let you know I am an electronic engineer :). I fully understand what you said. I have opened the unit and desoldered a SMT switch (I suspended it was failed in the beginning). I have not opened the display panel as I felt the chance of cable failure was very low. I have Oscilloscope, multimeter and SMT soldering/desoldering station. If I have schematic, I will raise the different question to you, definitely not like this. Why I still throw this simply question to you?
    1. Sometimes a standard circuit will be used on the similar products, like LCD display. So even I don?t have the specified schematic for this product, I may still be able to do some troubleshooting for this small portion with the standard schematic, like stepper motor amplifier.
    2. When I bought this DVD player one year ago, it cost me double price compared to now. And the repair shop will charge me at least 25% of a new DVD player price excluding components fee (maybe 50% or above if including components charge). So it is not worth to send it to a qualified repair shop.
    3. And the more importance is this is my hobby. I love to repair things. This is main reason why I don?t want to send it to repair shop. If I really need it, I can buy a new one.
    Anyway, thanks again. I will donate it to school.

I have seen this problem before this is caused by a failure of the backlight which provides illumination for the LCD screen. You may also want to check the inverter also since it fails often and interacts with the backlight.

    The flex cable might cause this. I would suggest that you take an ohmmeter and test the cable for open traces. This will take some time but it has to be done to eliminate it as a possibility. Now if the cable is good I would take voltage measurements to see if a component might be bad.

    Troubleshooting without a schematic is never a good idea. This is because you may miss something vital to your analysis. So the best bet would be to take the unit to a qualified repair shop to avoid any damages.

    Now we can look at this from a different point of view, we know what might be causing this issue the only problems are getting a schematic and opening up the unit. You could take the unit to a local vocational high school and donate it and take a tax write off. These suggestions go very little into repairing this unit because of what you will see once you open the device up. Let me tell you.

    You will see a switching power supply, an optical drive with a carriage, drive motor, and a laser control board, and finally the main DVD video/controller board. All of these will have surface mounted components which are very small and require a magnifying glass to look at them, along with specialized desoldering tools. This along with an Oscilloscope, laser power meter, and a multimeter. Now if you have all of this you will still need a schematic to know which test points to look at and where those test points are located.

    Are you begining to see the magnitude of this repair job, that is why in all of my post I try to get folks to see that working on these devices past the mechanical aspect, is not impossible, but you have to have the proper equipment for the job. Even as a certified technician, If I run into a main control board problem I troubleshoot it to component level and then once my technical curiosity is satisfied I contact the DVD player company and order the actual DVD controller module, and replace it, do the laser alignment and then charge the customer the cost of the module and labor.

    That is the raw truth about these device, they were designed around throw away technology, that is why one can cost 69-199 dollars at a pop.

    I know this is not what you want to hear and you may give me a bad rating, but I feel that by telling you the truth about these devices, you can make an informed choice of repairing this device or getting another one and donating the old one as a learning tool for future technicians or using it to educate yourself about the functions of the DVD player (once you get the schematic from the DVD player maker).

Failing Inverter An inverter, typically found inside a laptop computer, consists of a small board, which has impregnated electronic circuits stamped on it. Inverters look like thin boards about the of two sticks of chewing gum. The inverter and its bulb control the intensity of the liquid crystal display, which lights the screen monitor. The computer can control the output voltage of the inverter and either lighten or darken the screen. A special type of inverter can adjust the brightness of the screen by using an internal sensor to judge the room brightness, and then adjust the screen accordingly. Failing inverters give off some specific warning signs, which can be recognized by observing different screen characteristics.

Short Intermittent Display Upon turning on the laptop, the screen flashes on in the normal mode for a short period and then blinks to black. A very faint image appears in a dark background, which will be very hard to see almost invisible. After shutting off the laptop and restarting, the same mode occurs, where the screen appears normal for a few seconds then fades to black. This condition points to a failed inverter. To confirm this, plug in an operational external monitor; if the external monitor functions, the inverter has failed. b> Total Blackout with Ghost image b> The laptop turns on, as indicated by the power supply button, but the screen comes up black. The screen comes up black after restart. You might be able to detect a very dim or ghost-like image on the monitor. When you plug in a known functioning external monitor, the external monitor operates normally. This mode of display indicates a failed inverter. b> Long Term Periodic Operation b> With this failure mode, the laptop screen illuminates normally upon start-up and remains that way after several minutes, hours or even days, until it goes very dark again. Brightness controls or restoration attempts do not work. Most often, the screen will function normally with a computer restart, but will eventually return to black. Faint ghost images might appear, as seen in the total blackout mode. b> Dark With Color Variation b> Upon computer start-up, the monitor shows black or dark gray, accompanied by very faint images. The screen might have an intermittent color change, or remain on with a non-standard color variation, like pink or red. b> Auto Control Switch b> If the screen appears black, with no faint or ghost images, look for the lid switch near the back hinge. The switch, when depressed with a closed lid, shuts off the computer and monitor functions. Sometimes the switch becomes stuck in the closed position, disallowing the computer and monitor to turn on when opened. Pushing the switch manually several times can often free it up. If the switch tab has broken or jammed inside the case, it needs replacing. b> Loose Connection In this mode, the display looks normal upon start-up, but tapping the side case of the computer turns the screen black. More tapping results in the screen functioning normally then cutting out again. This condition points to a loose wire connection from the inverter to the LCD backlight lamp, or the video cable. The connectors can be accessed by removing the monitor bezel screws and pulling the plastic retainer off. Both connectors can be cleaned and refitted.

When my m45-s331 laptop is turn on for a long time, if i put the monitor off, maybe in not be turn on again and it's brightness become very low and hardly it can be seen! what should i do?


It's possible that the LCD lid close switch stuck in the "closed" position and the back-light stays off even when you open the LCD screen or turn on the laptop. The switch turns off the back-light when you close the LCD display to save the laptop battery power.

If that didn't fix it then there are 3 things that could have gone wrong:

1. Video cable connection from inverter to LCD got loose. To check this, follow instructions from step 3 on how to open the LCD and check if cable is fitted properly.

2. The video inverter is faulty
The screen inverter failure is very similar to the back-light lamp failure. In both cases the screen gets very dark and the image on the screen becomes very faint, barely visible under a bright light. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. You can replace this otherwise - you can find the inverter under the screen, follow the procedure described at point 3 to open up the screen.

3. The LCD monitor is faulty
If it works on an external monitor most likely the LCD is faulty and needs replacement. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. If not, you can do it yourself, it's pretty easy. Remove the rubber covers on the side of the screen, unscrew the screws take the plastic cover off, disconnect the video inverter and put in the new LCD after you connect the video inverter to it.

Screen comes on then goes out in 5 seconds. The backlight goes dark but the seen is working, just can't see it. The backlight is out...


mark587, Did you shine a very bright flashlight 1" from the screen to try and see the WIN-desktop ?? Even though the screen appears BLACK. Your words above said: JUST CAN'T SEE IT Did you really NOT see anything? Have you seen any of the longer video clips of "LCD Monitor Disassembly" on YOUTUBE? Some BLACK screen "symptom" lcd displays can be repaired for less than $10 in parts. Capacitors! Also check videos on lcd repair. Then get back here to fixya and I or any of the guys can help you decide what to do with your display whoose screen is now dark and lifeless. LCD
LCD stands for liquid crystal display. These types of displays have been around for awhile and are commonly used with computers. One reason for their big popularity is the ability to produces a better picture than CRT monitors but also being much thinner.
Pro’s
  • Low Energy Consumption – LCD monitors use very low amounts of power. This is why it is very commonly used in battery powered devices.
  • LCD screens also reduce the amount of glare on the screen which can be very beneficial if your TV is in a room with lots of light.
  • If an image is left on the screen too long, LCD screens are less likely to experience the image being burned into the screen. If this does occur, it’s easier to repair than other types of TV’s.
Con’s
  • The viewing angle of an LCD TV is typically not as great as Plasma but the difference is not great enough to make a huge difference.
  • LCD TV’s can sometimes get dead pixels which aren’t typically covered under warranty. Although they are very small, they can become very annoying.
  • Brightness levels aren’t as great as Plasma and it’s not possible to display darks quite as dark.

Plasma
Plasma technology hasn’t been as widely used as LCD in previous years but has become very popular in large HDTV’s. Although they have historically been more expensive than LCD TV’s, they are becoming more comparable in price.
Pro’s
  • Brightness and color are the major advantages of Plasma TV’s. They produce rich colors along with very deep blacks.
  • Their wide viewing angles allow more people to be able to watch TV comfortably.
  • The pixels of Plasma TV’s are lit individually unlike LCD screens. Because of this feature, the pixels can be completely turned off to display truck black colors.
Con’s
  • The lifespan of a Plasma TV is typically shorter than other types of TV’s. The lifespan can be extended by turning down the brightness of the screen.
  • Plasma TV’s are more susceptible to screen burn-in where an image is “burnt” onto the screen when left on the screen too long such as a network logo in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • Plasma TV’s require a panel of glass to cover it. This glass can reflect light and make it difficult to see the picture. If placed in a dark room, this typically isn’t an issue.

If you are not a technician you can´t solve this problem because are to desasembly your device and check the Q7 and Q8 and C5 that components are on bad conditions and need to be replaced,I told you because i repaired one of these monitors for the same problem

Very dark screen


Hi yes it looks like the inverter has failed and will need replacing, or if your compitent enough you can fix it at board level. The usual suspecs are a small SMD fuse on the inverter board / power supply board and/or buldging capacitors which look like blue or black cans.

You may need to check your desktop image for your monitor and change it to something lighter
The external monitor usually uses your computer's default and not ncessarily the one from your laptop monitor

Without taking it apart myself, it could be some wiring from the laptop to the screen

WS-55807: Images are dark on right side of display, but will go away after 3-4 hours.


you could be on the right track get some freeze spray and go around all the parts to see if you can make it act up, same with heatgun or hair dryer when first turned on heat one area at a time to narrow your problem down

Dark image


Flyback transformers usually have 2 adjustable rods - 1 is for focus the other is for screen (G2) voltage. try turning Clockwise the Screen adjust with brightness-contrast at max. Till you see white diagonal lines, then go back until the lines disappear - then tune the brightness to your desired level.
