The kohler steam unit keeps shutting down prematurely

Keeps shutting down showing ''error 5'', but i cant find any problem with the water feed.  is it a controller error, or is there a filter inside the unit that gets clogged.  the unit is brand new

We just installed our new K-1696 and are having the same problem. The water feed is strong and I can't find any filter that may be clogged. I'm calling Kohler in the AM unless there is something I'm failing to check.

I've been struggling with this exact error for the past week and fixed it last night. The Error 5 message was misleading in my case and actually was caused by the steam outlet inside the shower and, even after replacing the entire unit and getting the same error, i fixed it in two seconds. Since this was one of the posting i encountered during my frantic searches, i thought i would come back and share my blog posting on this error and my fix:

Since I don't have your model number for this, I am going to attempt an answer for you. Yes, there could be a filter but not always. Sometimes, the sensor on these units can become stuck closed and is sending a false error. Does the unit seem to be working? If it is, then it probably is a false signal. If not, the there could be debris that has gotten into the water lines. Either way, if the unit is new, then it will be under some sort of warranty. I would contact either Kohler or an authorized service rep.

My dehumidifier runs for short time then shuts off.

Check the filters, the water tank and what setting you have it on. The unit will cycle on and off to maintain the humidity level you want. If its set too high, the unit may only have to operate for short periods.

If it has a couple hundred hours or more, try cleaning the slips rings on the back of the rotor shaft. They should be very shiny and not black or polished looking.

Error 5

-error 5 is caused by the back pressure of the steam head if water supply to the generator is sufficient and the steam output pipe to the steam head is plumbed according to the manual.
-Kohler recommends to modify the steam head to remove the wax motor, spring and snap ring in the housing. Call Kohler for instructions.

Can't search for a manual without model, type, serial, etc numbers...

A few things to take a look at:

1) Oil level / pressure sending unit. This is normally bypassed as long as the start switch is pressed. When engine starts, and switch is released, engine will die if sending unit is defective, or you are low on oil.

2) Exhaust temperature sensors. Older units were notorious for burning these up.

3) Cooling Water Temperature sensor. These cause trouble often, but mostly due to water pump impeller being eaten away by galvanic action and not able to pump water as effecively. End result is water temp higher than normal, which trips the switch, which kills the engine.

4) Alternator (generator) output not as it should. If output doesn't rise to proper level within a few seconds of engine start, the engine will be shut down.

5) Choke not working as it should

6) Bad fuel, bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter.

There is a float valve interior of the steam generator that supplies water to the generator unit. There are no parts available for that unit, and Kohler was useless re: repair. I have the same unit and mine is doing the same thing. I took it apart and there is a washer worth about a nickel that is inside the unit. I flipped the washer over in mine and it worked for about a week....then back to the same problem.
