Cannot download photos

I have had this canon A540 Powershot for 6 months... all fine..dont use it an awful lot... have only downloaded photos to pc twice before. Just returned from holiday, and connected camera to pc (windows vista) and ensured interface cable is connected to camera and camera is set to playback setting and switched on as per instructions, but pc will not recognise camera via USB port....tried on Windows xp pc and still the same problem. Interface cable has only sat in the box when not in use, cant quite believe it has just suddently become faulty (although stranger things have happened I guess). Any ideas, as camera has ptp utility on it...tried looking to see if any settings could be changed on camera, but couldnt see anything obvious....thanks

thanks for responding ptp = picture transfer protocol, means you can plug the camera into the pc usb port and on Windows XP and above, pictures will transfer without need for the camera software being loaded, but you only get limited things that you can do with the pictures using this method... (this worked before) I have uninstalled the software and reloaded with no joy and have tried 4 usb ports all of which I know to work with other devices....looks more and more like the cable or interface port on camera...

When I connect the USB Cable to download nothing happens. My pc freezes and I must close the Cacon program and re-open. Even after trying that, the pictures will not transfer to my pc.

I am having the A540 for about 7 months. I am having the same problem. That is my PC is not recoganizing the A540. I have Nero Photsmart that instantly recoganize any memory card camera. I have an old Olympus which works perfectly well. but both my PC and laptop (both run XP) is not recoganizing the A540. Changed batery/SD card and tried no use.

What is ptp utility new to me. I suggest the first thing to do is if you have the software from the disk loaded - you un install it. Restart the computer - plug camera in and set it to upload mode. Windows scanner/Camera Wizard will take you along from there. If it does not change the USB port. Come back with the next move

    It does indeed.
PTP threw me for the moment but you are right.
What about a card reader have you considered that approach?
Even trying the card in another computer- simply to prove which bit is playing up
    Camera/Card/Computer/Cable
Its one of the four I guess and process of elimination will prove which
As the camera is 6 month old I guess you still have the option to send it back, once you have established where the problem is.

Window Vista not recognizing my Canon Power Shot A540 to download

I recommend getting a USB card reader for your memory card.

You should make sure that the camera is on for the transfer. If that doesn't work, try another USB input.

Canon A540 or SD card problem

Hi Rich, This sounds like a problem with filing system of the memory card and is indicative of forthcoming bigger problems. Try remove from the camera and slip into a memory card reader attached to a PC. You have to try and recover as much photos as you can. Thereafter, it may be required to format the memory card either via PC or the format command in the set-up/menu of the camera. Further you can use diagnostic utilities (PC side) to determine if the memory has developed any bad areas. Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things turns up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.

Canon Powershot A540 Digital Camera

Konw this is an old post but this may help others with this problem. Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Could a photo printer corrupt my camera?

Do you have a memeory card reader? They work a lot faster than cable transfer. Get one if you don't, for about $10 or so, or borrow one to test your card. Then see if your memory card (the "disk") displays your pictures onto the computer through the card reader. If it does, your friend might have physically damaged the USB cable connector on the camera or the card socket inside the battery compartment (or, of course, you might have done so yourself somehow). As long as you have the card reader you'll still be able to transfer images. If the pictures don't show up on the card reader, it's more likely the card itself was damaged, though you say you tried another card. If you've already downloaded the pictures, try reformatting the card (which will erase everything) and then give it another shot.
