My dell dimension 4600 desktop always resets itself. When i open my documents or any other program, the desktop clears out and closes the programs.
When you say, resets, do you mean it restarts itself? as in shut down and reboot? or, do you mean it is closing the program and going back to your desktop?
IF it is rebooting itself, that could be a faulty memory chip. If you noticed any blue screens or freezing, that would also indicate faulty memory...
However...
IF its just closing the program and returning to windows, it COULD be a faulty program, or a virus infection or spyware infection.
If that were MY machine, I would move all my stuff to MY DOCUMENTS and back it up to a flash drive. Then, I would locate my discs and reformat the machine or take it to a shop to reformat.
If upon reformatting, the issues persist, id replace the RAM and possibly replace the system board. BUT, since the Dimension 4600 id rather old, I would consider replacing the tower with another used one from a local mom and pop PC shop. they are about 100 bucks, and, you can usually get your data and extra drives moved over to the new machine for a few bucks more.
