This solution is to copy your entire hard drive. You will need hard drive imaging software. One product is Symantec Ghost but you can "google" hard drive imaging to find other products. This type of software will create a "snapshot" of your hard disk. It will then write it to some other attached disk that you specify. Without knowing how mush data you have, I would suggest that you save your "ghost" image to another hard drive of greater size than the one you have installed. Hope this is of help to you.

Is it possible to recover data from the disk inside the external hard disk?

See first this clicking sound is not good in terms of hard drive failure as continuous clicking is one of the symptom of hard drive failure.
Secondly you have tried to do something with the hard drive by your own that you should not as it is always recommended that you should not open your hard drive in any open environment except Class 100 Clean Room Labs that is only available with Professional Data Recovery Company.

This is recommended because opening the hard drive in an open environment can damage your hard drive severely thus it reduces the chances of successful data recovery from the hard drive.

Now if your data is really very important then i would suggest you to take help from a professional data recovery company.

I have an external hard disk drive. It has a 160 GB transcend, Yesterday, all things were working OK, but today, when I insert the disk, my laptop gets hung. The disk is being detected, but after opening,...

Firstly, recover your data on the external hard drive with third party data recovery software. Then you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.
For data recovery program,I have a professional one on my computer that can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drive crash, system sabotage, virus attack etc.You can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your data can be recovered. http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm

My hard disk on nx9420 failed (i get the message 'critical error - imminent hard disk failure, save all your data'; but the computer will not boot (just says press 'control alt delete')....

This warningmeans the hard disk will fail sometime in the near future. You need to back upyour data regularly before the hard disk fails or you will lose your data.
When the hard disk fails, you need to replace with a new one and installWindows on the new hard drive to get your computer working again.
If you cannot boot up your computer then -
Remove the hard driveand connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer detects it as an external storage deviceand you can open the various folders and files then back up your data.
If not you are in trouble, there are companies that can recover data fromfaulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: st9100824as-(s1)) WARNING: Immediatelly back-up your data and replace you hard **** drive. A falure may be imminent. Press F1 to continue

Hi sqarrab,

A SMART Drive failure indicates that your hard disk is about to die. Sometimes it will last a few says, sometimes even months. Refer the link below for more information.

I suggest you keep a backup of all your data as soon as possible. Once the hard disk fails, there's nothing you can do to get your data back. To get rid of the message, buy a new hard drive, and then copy back all your data.

Smart disk programme

Back up your data as soon as possible so when the hard disk actually fails you won't lose your data.
When this happens you will need to buy a new hard disk and re-install Windows and you can copy your data back onto the new hard disk.

Hard drive failure in system less than 2 years old!!

Since you are comfortable with working inside your computer, the best thing to do now is to purchase an external enclosure for your type of hard drive, SATA or EIDE.

Alternately you can use a live linux cd, boot up with that, and transfer your data to an external drive.

Once your data is safe, try booting to the Windows cd and attempt a repair installation.

And finally, yes, hard drives can go bad in 2 years or less.
