Garmin Forerunner 305 miscalculating ascent and calories

My Garmin 305 is awesome. It tells me how farI traveled, pace, et cetera (and heart rate) but when it reports calories, it reports well over 5 times what I have calculated using various other methods. For example, today I rode a bicycle 50.3 miles, with an average pace of 5 minutes per mile. It reported that I burned 6815 calories.
It thinks I'm running, even though I've got it set to cycling. I confirmed this by looking in my history, and found no cycling history, but all my rides are in the running history. My profile is configured for running, however.
Help!
Also, the ascent and descent appear to be miscalibrated too.

Firstly, the ascent and descent are only approximate, and can be very approximate! This is because it's using GPS to calculate your height above sea level when GPS is really only accurate for position Lat and Long. When calculating height, a very, very small error can lead to a large variation in actual height. You should never use a GPS for height if needed for navigation (ie climbing walking etc) If you need accuaracy you will need to get a barometric altimeter.v

As for calories, I think you have identified your problem, it's calculating calories on running not cycling. Not sure what the answer is as I don't know what software you are using but if you are using Garmin TC, bin it and use SportTracks. Takes a bit of getting used to but to really get the best out of your 305 this is excellent software and it's free. Any anomolies like your calorie issue/wrong category import can be changed manually plus a whole host of other stuff. Garmin doesn't even let you edit activities - crazy.

How do i change a battery in a garmin 305

Hi David!

From your Owners Manual (Page 54)
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/984_OwnersManual.pdf

REPLACE THE HEART RATE MONITOR BATTERY

"The heart rate monitor contains a user replaceable CR 2032 battery...
Locate the circular battery cover on the back of the heart rate monitor. Use a coin to twist the cover counter-clockwise until it is loose enough to remove. Remove the cover and replace the battery. Be careful not to lose or damage the o-ring gasket on the cover. Then use a coin to twist the cover back into place."

Hope this helps.

My Garmin 305 wont record calories when I'm in the Gym. I select the "Other" sport mode, the little guy skiing, and It doesn't recored or even register calories? It records during my Jog sessions while...

The 305 uses distance to calculate calories. They sell a "foot pod" that you can use indoors, and that will count your calories by calculating the distance you have traveled. The problem however, is that using distance to calculate calories is so inaccurate! The calorie count that the 305 provides is almost always WAY too high. Other heart rate monitors use heart rate to calculate calories burned, and it is a much more accurate measure. My garmin thinks i burned 700 calories an hour today while i was snowboarding, and, while that would be nice, there is NO way it's true!!
