I have a pentax zx-50 Camera. I've had it now almost 9 years. Its been used off and on and the last time it was used was around 4 years ago. Its been placed in safe keeping, so I decided to whip it out and take pictures of our new baby.
I Placed New Batteries in the camera.
I placed film in the camera.
I Then turned the camera on.
I then tried to change the camera mode, and it made a noise like it was trying to take a picture. The film then Advanced. Then I tried to get the camera to zoom in, and it wouldnt. I then tried to use the flash, it wouldnt. I then tried to change the mode again, and it wouldnt. By the time I was done changing modes, and what not, it said it had already gone through a whole roll of film. The camera then wouldnt rewind the film. I had to auto rewind it using the midroll rewind button. It wont take any pictures, but yet says its advancing. Any help here? Thanks

I seem to be having the same shutter problem. I live 2 hours from any camera repair locations. Is this a repair worth making for this model? I love the pictures I used to get with my Pentax zx50, however I'm nervous it will be really expensive to fix and not worth it for a 9 year old camera. What do you think?

Stuck in the same boat with the exact same symptoms and circumstances as jenjennings described (wondering if you stole my identity).
Just wondering what you ended up doing and if it worked...?

Re:
Try pouring lighter fluid around curtain mechanism, motor and other moving parts. but do not wet it. use small amount of fluid only, avoid the lenses. this will remove the materials making your unit stucked.. never use alcohol or anything. fluid are so volatile that makes it a good cleaner.
I forgot to say you do that while operating the unit, or make the parts move while cleaning [:0)I forgot to say you do that while operating the unit, or make the parts move while cleaning [:0)

Re:
I really think this is the classic zx - 50 shutter motor problem : small motor on the side of the mirror box is not cocking the shutter . This is very repairable but unfortunately it requires fair amount stripping down of the camera to get to the fault and so you will have to take it in for repairs.
Re philipp coment: do not pour anything into shutter curtain area ( this may work with some older cameras like ME super but not the later models ). Shutter problem caused by small plastic gear on the mirror box motor that needs replacing.Re philipp coment: do not pour anything into shutter curtain area ( this may work with some older cameras like ME super but not the later models ). Before using it I suggest you to keep it in a dehumidifier. Or a large airtight container with dehumidified silica gel. Keep it there for two or three days.
When a camera is lying around, fungus tends to grow inside. Also the metal parts become rusty. Dehumidifying and exposing to mild sunlight might reduce these effects.
Gentle patting might also relieve the problem. Don't pat too hard, or you will have more problems!

Clean the battery contacts with a soft rubber pencil eraser. It doesn't take much corrosion -- due to moisture, or skin oil deposited on the posts -- to create resistance enough to keep the camera from getting a full supply of power.
if its just a sticky mirror you could try to very genteely flip it down again but if the shutter is jamed in its sliders it could need to go to a camera shop to get it "fully serviced!" also check its not just the shutter lock button stuck in, or the shutter is locked open,
Repair would be at least $139 from Blue Moon Camera. I would buy another MZ-50 (ZX-50 is the same) off eBay or you could buy a ZX-30 from Blue Moon Camera for $75 with 1 year warranty. They are professional.
first make sure the mirror is fully down. if down
take your MZ50 to a camera store and try a different lens. if it does the same thing then your camera needs repaired. flex circuit,
if the different lens works then the lens needs repaired.
Two lens should be good enough. First one for closer objects, 28-80mm lens which covers wide angel to portrait shoots and 70-200mm for distance shootings. Bring the camera to the camera shop to try on. Some pawn shop should have good prices. makes sure to purchase with returnable guarantee if not satisfied. -Good Luck. -James
