It could be a problem with the CD drive or the Operating System.
One way of checking if is to boot it up using a windows disk. If it boots up using a windows disk, then CD drive is ok. If it doesn't then its a CD/DVD issue.
If it boots up to it, that means it's just an issue with the OS. You can also try to delete upper and lower filters - go to start>run>regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\....click on the +
SYSTEM\....click on the +
CurrentControlSet\....click on the +
Control\Class\....click on the +
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} ....click on the folder
Look for upper and lower filters from the right side, once you find it, right click on it and then delete it.
Close the windows that are open then restart your computer.

Hi, You can try cleaning the lens/laser eye and make sure that there are no dust on top. If that doesn't work, it is possible that the CD ROM would need replacement. It might turn out that it is cheaper to replace than have it repaired. Good luck and kind regards.

Hi again,
I can only assume that per your post "...put any cd on.." you are pertaining to placing a known good CD into the CD ROM tray and pushing it back to its cradle but the laptop will not read it.
If however my assumption based on your description is incorrect, then perhaps you can further elaborate on the problem.
