I received a DA-88 tape for a project I am working on. It is SMPTE, 29.97df ,48kHz. It will not play. I shows like a blank with no movement on any tracks from the led display. It was converted from a PAL master. Could this be causing the problem.

Maybe you could just clean the heads. If anything visible comes off they're TOO dirty. Or or look at it yourself with a strong light source and see the wear by evaluating reflections from the head surface.
The cleaner tape is only supposed to be used after 50 hrs of record /play time , if you are using your cleaner tape alot , you are damaging the helical scanning head and wearing out it,s sensitivity ,
Users have found out that the cleaning tape is like sandpaper made to remove metal particles left behind everytime you run your high 8 tapes , The best way is to send it in to a authorized tascan repair shop in your area , don,t worry there,s always some shops that can be found in your area , they will do a bench test for around 45-50 bucks and tell you what if anything it will cost to fix your problem ! if it turns out to be a dirty helical scanning head they will clen that with 100% alcohol and test it , that they can do usually for the price of the bench test since they do have to remove the cover to see whats going on under the hood! , well the red error light on my machine does come on sometimes when my 2 machines are out of sync, but with shutting the unit down and starting it back up usually takes care of that issue...by the way how often do you use the cleaner?..most da-88 users are totally affraid of even using them !, good luck and if you have any more questions please feel free to email me> glenn
if i,m not miss understanding the problem is rec audio ng.if it,s, the posible cause are; 1;head dirty at the line of the tape causing data from head can,t write the tape optimal.for this problem you can clean the head carefull the head can easy broke., 2;if the picture having tracking posible the guide that bring the tape at the left doesn't fully at the track.for this problem at emergency you can try to push the left guide.
This is a nice DAT recorder for its time. This unit uses a drive gear system for the FF, RR and the take up reels. Try the ff and rr, if they work, I am quessing there is a bad take up idler clutch assembly.l If the ff and rr does not work, the drive belt(s) are most likely bad. Good Luck
