Hi,
I bought the Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 6 days ago, I previously had a Multimedia Keyboard (which is the same keyboard, but wired). I bought this kit because I just love that keyboard layout. Anyhow, everything works BUT the volume key up/down. Mute works. I've checked the configuration utility, and everything is set correctly in there. I've checked also the drivers, and windows reports the peripheral works fine.
I am running this on XP Pro x64. Previous keyboard worked fine on there. Haven't tried the new wireless kit on a 32 bit version, so I don't know if it's just a x64 bug.
I am out of ideas. Please help.
Go to start and run then type services.msc or if using windows 7 just go to start and type services.msc in the search box. Once open find the service "Human Interface Device Access". Change it from manual to automatic and make sure that it is started.
Try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932875. I found that Hidserv.dll was in the incorrect file and copied it to C:\WINDOWS\system32. Volume controls now work correctly.

I had this problem with a Microsoft keyboard for ages. I tried everything, including the HID services DLL. Eventually I found that connecting the keyboard to the PC via x1 usb connector was the problem.
When I used the Purple connector to connect to the keyboard PS2 socket, and used a USB - PS2 mouse adapter to connect the mouse to the green PS2 socket everything works fine.
Hope this helps.

Identical problem being experienced with a multimedia keyboard. Using XP Pro and a Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.1 (comes with a Wireless Optical Mouse 2000 to make the Microsoft Optical Desktop 1000 Model 1014).
Everything works EXCEPT for the volume controls. Mute works fine but the sound levels cannot be adjusted from the keyboard.
Have reinstalled the drivers twice and also followed the advice offered by Microsoft of resetting the controller and the keyboard - no change. According the XP Pro, all devices are working correctly.
Would appreciate hearing of a solution.
