Maybe you forgot to install the audio driver.
Please insert the board driver into cd drive the install the audio driver.

Here is the drivers for XP- for that board from Intel all of them are below,if there is a link above, it is for the Original Disk inccluded with the board in an ISO format, the link is also on the on page

I got this from gomez73 and it worked for me.

are you saying that both video and audio drivers doesn't recognize in xp?if so, find its approriate drivers on the internet manually although it takes time, that's the only way to find the most compatible drivers for your system 'coz xp's updaters are ****

Try updating your sound drivers. This should normaly fix it. If that doesnt work, you could buy a PCI sound card and install it no problems. U can find the driver here http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=886050

if it consist of intel motherboard than download driver from the intel site . http://downloadcenter.intel.com and get the driver compitable for all OS. This will definately solve your problem if you have intel board and if it of diffrent make kindly visit the site of that mother board. ok

the model number you have listed is not 100% correct. If you found another site that shows two audio drivers, please list the link here in this post.
Or goto this VIA link & match the model number to the motherboard picture.

As you will see, P4M-266 is part of the model number. 8233 is part of the chipset.
VT8233 chipset. P4M266A-A4E Pentium 4 Main Board. There are two On Board Audio AC97 Drivers.
