I have a Sub Zero 550 and it runs all the time. Is this normal and if it is can I install a relay to have the fan only come on when the compressor kicks in.

Compressor won't run or it is "clicking' on and off: This normally could be a bad start relay and over load for the compressor, dirty condenser coils need cleaning, condenser fan motor is not running or the compressor itself. To check the compressor properly you should test it with an amp meter, each compressor is rated in running amps  ( see model/serial tag or the sticker on the compressor )...if the compressor is drawing too much current, this may be why it is shutting off. Check the model tag for proper amp rating. Some relays will be easy to notice the broken with them, they may be burnt. Example oneexample twoexample three. Some of these relays can be removed and give them a little shake, and if they rattle around inside the relay is likely bad. Compressors can also seize and click on and off or one of the electrical windings inside the compressor could have opened up. You can use a test cord to help check the compressor and this also will help with the amp test. If the compressor checks ok and you want to install areplacement start relay. You will need to find out which winding is which. You will need an ohm meter to determine the windings. First check to see if you have windings in the compressor. Then check to see if they are grounded. If the compressor has windings and they are not grounded, you can find which winding is which. Check for grounded windings by reading from each terminal to a good ground on the cabinet. Read from the top terminal to the lower left terminal. Read from the top terminal to the lower right terminal. Read from the lower left terminal to the lower right terminal. Write down the resistance of each reading as you go. The highest reading you get will be the run and start winding of the compressor in series with each other. The other terminal left will be the common terminal. Read from the common terminal to each of the other terminals. The terminal with the lower resistance will be the run winding. The higher resistance the start winding. Using the original style relay is always preferred, but using a general replacement can "get you by" if needed.

My refridgerator is a 550 sub zero and it will not freeze in the freezer and the temperature in the fridge is off as well. What do I do?

It is likely the condenser fan is not functioning or the condenser is plugged with dirt. You may need to open the compressor access panel to check. If you can hear the compressor running, and the condenser feels warm, the fan should be running. If it isn't, it probably needs to be replaced.

Just had the condenser fan motor replaced on my 550 sub zero refrigerator. I forgot to asked the serviceperson the following questions: Does the fan continously stay on and what is the normal sound of...

Good day,
On models with 2 compressors the condenser fan motor runs 24/7. It must since the compressors run randomly and that motor must be on since it handles both units.

Fan noise is subjective. It itself makes little noise but the blade does. If for example the blade was changed from the nylon style to a metal blade (good idea) then it would be somewhat louder.
If the noise is not objectionable then I would use it as is.

My Subzero Condenser fan runs constantly - but coils are clean

If it is similar to mine at home (Model 550) the condensor fan is designed to run continuously, even when both the freezer and refrigerator are shut off. There is no control or switch in the fan circuit, so it just runs whenever the fridge is plugged in to the wall. It uses about 56 watts.

Freezer not working on Sub-Zero 550 Refrigerator/Freezer

You probably need to defrost freezer - frozen moisture possibly stockedevap. fan motor in the freezer. Turn it OFF for 24 hours and start itover. Make sure no moisture condensation on the freezer compartmentsurfaces as walls and shelfs. If so wipe it out. Pull out and remove upper basket from the freezer, push fan switch which is located almost under ice maker. You have to hear evaporator fan motor start working. Still not work? Call to professionaltechie! Good luck! :)

Fan / Compressor runs constantly

Condenser fans (the fan next to the compressor) do run all of the time. That is normal.
