My dryer takes much longer to dry loads now

I have a GE DVLR223GG1WW - it is less than 2 years old. My loads used to be dry at the end of a standard cycle. Now, I have to run that cycle 3-4 times before the clothes are dry. My father in law took the dryer apart and cleared out a bunch of extra lent that had gotten past the filter hoping that would solve the problem. It did not. We clean the filter after each use. Help!

Hi!

You need to check the following things to sort out the issue you are facing with--

Improper sorting •Separate heavy items from lightweight items (generally, to dry a well-sorted washer load is a well-sorted dryer load).
Large loads of heavy fabrics •Large, heavy fabrics contain more moisture and take (like beach towels) longer to dry. Separate large, heavy fabrics into smaller loads to speed drying time.
Controls improperly set •Match control settings to the load you are drying.
Lint filter is full •Clean lint filter before every load.
Improper or obstructed ducting •Check installation instructions for proper ducting/venting.
•Make sure ducting is clean, free of kinks and unobstructed.
•Check to see if outside wall damper operates easily.
•Check the Installation Instructions to make sure the dryer venting is correct.
Blown fuses or tripped •Replace fuses or reset circuit breakers. Since most dryers circuit breaker use 2 fuses/breakers, make sure both are operating.
Overloading/combining loads •Do not put more than one washer load in the dryer at a time.
Underloading •If you are drying only one or two items, add a few items to ensure proper tumbling.

Dryer Taking too Long to Dry Your Clothes?

A very common issue we deal with on FixYa is clothes dryers that are taking too long to dry clothes. Here's a few tips on keeping your drying time to the minimum.
1. Check and empty your lint trap before each load. If air flow is restricted, your dryer will need longer to get the job done. A clean lint trap will allow for maximum intake air to the dryer blower.
2. Check the exhaust ductwork for lint buildup. If the 4" ductwork that carries your warm, moist, lint-laden air to the exterior of your home is blocked with years of lint and moisture, chances are pretty good your dryer is taking longer than it should to get your clothes dry.
  • Disconnect the dryer power cord (and gas line if a gas unit), slide the dryer forward far enough to access the 4" ductwork clamp at the back of the dryer. Disconnect the ductwork at the dryer and separate to inspect both in the dryer exhaust duct and the ductwork as well.
  • Remove all built up lint. You may need to access under the floor, or in the crawlspace, or basement to get at all the areas that lint may be built up. Remember that when there's an elbow (turn) chances are pretty good there's lint in there, so take the time to separate the ductwork where needed to give it a thorough cleanout.
  • Long straight sections of ductwork can be easily cleaned by purchasing a "webster" style pole brush.
  • Clean the exhaust duct of the dryer but be careful not to damage anything inside your dryer
  • Reconnect and turn the dryer on air fluff to blow the rest out.
3. Remove lint build up from inside the machine
  • Turn power off again
  • Remove the front cover of your dryer
  • Remove the front drum support/air duct from the front of the dryer
  • Carefully vacuum the lint out of the dryer with soft brush attachment on your vac. Be careful not to damage any ignitor or electrical items.
  • Clean the inside of the lint trap duct of sediment/ buildup
4. Make sure your washing machine is spinning the water out of your loads correctly. This one is pretty obvious, but it bears mentioning.
If your clothes feel wetter than normal, it's definitely going to take longer to dry. Be sure to wash "like" items. A medium/large load of towels is better than a towel and 5 cotton shirts ( that towel will throw the load off balance and your machine won't spin as fast to get the water out).
5. Medium-sized loads dry faster than mega-large-cram-it-in loads.
The idea of getting all you can into a dryer (or washer) to save time and money will end up costing you both time and money. I've seen this played out many times in my laundromats: You will find that a medium, loosely packed load will dry faster and with less wrinkles and less ironing needed.

Using these guidelines will help keep your drying times to a minimum and also allow your machine to work for many years to come.

Takes too long to dry clothes

You may have a clogged air vent, check that the air vent hose is not smashed, if it is not smashed, have your dryer vent cleaned professionally, all the way from where the dryer connects to the wall to where the vent leaves the home,
Recheck the dryer operation, dryer vents should be cleaned every other year for optimum performance

It takes forever to dry a load of clothes. Drum

Hello,
Have you checked your vent for blockage? Over time, lint build-up in the vent and in the back of the dryer makes your drying time longer and longer. Unplug the dryer, pull it out and disconnect the vent. Using a flashlight and a vacuum, clean out the back of the dryer that connects to the vent and the vent itself. If you have a long vent line, you'll need to find a away to clean it out to clear any blockage. I use a hand-held plumbers snake that rolls up and pulls out as much length as needed. Then spin it around in the vent to knock off lint attached inside the vent tube walls. It may be easier to do this from the outside, but you can do it from the inside too. Check your outside vent cap for blockage and make sure the vent flap outside is not stuck closed. Also make sure when you push the dryer back into place, that you don't squish the vent tube, if it is made of plastic or foil. After reconnecting the vent, turn on the dryer. The air flow may blow out the lint you have dislodged with the snake. Clean out as necessary at the outside vent. I have a long vent line on my dryer, so I have do this annually. This has helped shorten my dry time every time I do it. Of course, cleaning out the filter regularly, does help too. The more often you clean the filter, the less lint that will build up in the vent . Hope this helps. Douglas

Sensor dry takes a couple of times to dry clothes

My mother has one of these machines. Less than a year old. I think that is just the nature of these dryers. The vent goes right through the wall and is a 2 foot run. I know their are no restrictions of any sort and the lint filter cleaned after every load. I have found that if I put it on More dry it does fairly well.

Dryer heats with smaller loads

1. unplug your machine and rach as far in the exhaust part of the dryer to see if there is an obstrucxtion
2.Take out the lint filter and make sure there are no gaping holes in the screen
3. Check the exhaust house leaving the machine or blockage, this hose should not run more than ten feet for optimal drying time.
4. its your heating element
