SOURCE: I try to connect my BD player with HDMI port cable
Is your sony receiver HDMI pass through? some receivers dont allow audio just video through HDMI. Connect a digital coaxial cable from the dvd to the receiver and you should get true dolby surround.

SOURCE: sound not loud Sony DAV-IS10
I think its the fact that the speakers are pretty tiny, even tho BOSE has proved that size doesnt matter. i will agree i have a descent size home and i have to max it out all the time to watch a movie
just a design flaw IMHO.

SOURCE: problems with hearing sound from bravia LCD tv through bravia DAV-HDX275 theatre system
The fiber optic port on back on your bravia tv is only for when your using a over the air antenna and watching local atsc channels in your local market. You need to run the fiber optic from your hd cablebox if it has one or your hd sat box if it has one. If you don't have a set top box with the fiberoptic port on it you can use a digital coax cable from the cable or sat box to sound system. The only other way to get sound if you don't have a cable or sat box is to run the red and white rca audio cable from the tv to the sound system and got to the audio setup on tv and turn the tv speakers off and you might have to adjust the audio to fixed instead of variable.

SOURCE: Volume Problem with my TV and Home Theater system
I had the same problem with mine. The solution I found was to use an optical audio cable rather than the red and white RCA audio jacks. Hope this helped.
SOURCE: No sound from TV thru sony bravia hdx576wf; DVD & CD audio ok.
Could be a sync calibration issue. Try to divert the TV sound to another input source on the Hometheatre system if possible, if it is a go then maybe the TV audio needs to be recalibrated. Make sure TV audio setup menu option has not changed also.

ha ha, nope, tried that already.... it sounds like when you activate surround sound but you only have stereo, the volume change with the dimmer but the max is possibly only 5% or what it was before
