Apple icon always on new ipod touch and session could not start

I just received my ipod touch today. I plugged it into my computer with USB cable. I registered this as a new device though itunes. Everything worked fine, it synched and I used it for about 1/2 hour. I turned off the unit for 2 hours. When I turned it back on, the apple icon appears and won't do anything else. I held down the home and on/off button until the logo went away and came back, the ipod still doesn't do anything. I restarted my computer and plugged in the ipod to synch it again with my library and the unit beeped and I got an error message saying, "itunes could not back up the ipod because a session could not be started with the ipod."
With this kind of trouble, should I just return it?

I tried all suggestions sent to me and the ipod is just not responding. The only thing it will do is show the apple icon. I have sent it back and ordered a replacement. I will keep the instructions to reset the ipod to factory from user "redemption" that gave me that info. Thank you so much everyone for trying to help with this. I just think I received a lemon. We are an ipod family, very familiar with the units, but this one was one I couldn't solve. thanks everyone.

If that happened, then yes. then you could just buy a new one. but trust me, that's probably a defective ipod.

There are two things that you can do, apart from just sending it back. : )

A) Set it back to factory settings:

  1. Press and hold both the Home button and the Power button for a couple of seconds. It should reboot and show the Apple logo. Do not let go.
  2. When the logo comes up, release the Power button. You should only be pressing the Home button now.
  3. After one or two seconds, the original image that was presented on the iPod when you turned it on for the first time will show up: the iTunes logo with a sync cable underneath it.
  4. Connect the iPod to iTunes. It will ask you to restore the iPod. Say yes and begin the whopping 150MB download for the iPod restore app.
  5. Wait a couple of minutes until it does it's thing, then rejoice.

or
B) Do the following (I would only suggest this if the A. does not work)
  1. Plug your Ipod into your computer.
  2. Hold the "Hold" and "Menu" buttons until the screen goes black and shows the Apple logo again, then release the buttons.
  3. Wait for about 5-15 minutes.
  4. Your computer will make a chiming sound and then the Ipod will show the locked screen with the battery logo.

Ahh, well hey, I'm sorry I couldn't resolve your problem and for the inconvenience of a lemon Ipod. ^^; I hope the next one you receive will be top quality.

Thanks for the wonderful rating on the solution I provided! But, if I didn't resolve the problem, don't be afraid to mark me down in the rating for that. = )

Recovery mode with out using the power button

An iPod Touch's "Recovery Mode" is for alleviating major operating system issues.
Recovery Mode rolls back your iPod's operating system, stripping problematic updates and downloads from the unit.
The goal of this total system recovery is to revert the iPod to a stable, usable version.
Before you use Recovery Mode, exhaust other troubleshooting methods.
In some cases, Recovery Mode is triggered automatically after a failed system update or system restore.
When it goes into Recovery Mode automatically, you cannot use your iPod until you complete the recovery process.
You can get your iPod Touch out of Recovery Mode using Apple's free iTunes software.

Turn on your computer and open iTunes.
If you are prompted to download any new iTunes updates, install the updates before proceeding.
Plug an iPod USB cable into your computer.
Do not plug the other end into your iPod Touch yet.

Turn off your iPod Touch. If the iPod Touch is already shut down, skip this step.
Press and hold the Home button on your iPod Touch, and plug the other end of the USB cable into your iPod Touch.
Release the Home button after you see a white USB icon and the iTunes logo appear on your iPod Touch's screen.
At this time, a pop-up should appear on your computer screen, explaining that the software has detected an iPod in Recovery Mode.
Click "OK."
Click on the iPod Touch from underneath the "Devices" heading on the left-hand side of your screen.
Click on the "Home" tab, and then click "Restore."
Once it's restored, your iPod Touch goes out of Recovery Mode and you can start using it again.
The restoration process takes a few minutes.
Do not disconnect your iPod Touch until a prompt appears, letting you know the system restored successfully.
