Question about Jl Audio E6450 Car Audio Amplifier

1 Answer

Jl audio e6450 cuts out above mid-volume

I purchased an entire system from a local dealer that included a jl audio e6450. The amp ran great for a long time until during an extended road trip it started cutting out and going into protect mode. I returned to the dealer, they replaced it and reinstalled it. I tried asking questions as to what had caused the problem but they didn't seem to have any answers and made me feel like an a-hole for asking. Once they replaced it, the amp worked fine for another month until it started cutting out again. I have it hooked up to 2-extant 10", and some infinity 6X9. Now any time I turn the volume above 20(max 34) it cuts out completly and the red protect light comes on. Somewhere in their half-hearted explanation they explained that it the wiring that was installed was cheap and that I shouldn't turn the radio up to loud. I'm a total noob, and completely naive when it comes to audio electronics. Hopefully someone on here can give me some information about the problem so I can at least be somewhat armed when I take it back in to try to get it fixed again. Thanks in advance. -K-

Take a look at the power, ground and remote wires. the power and ground should be a minimum 6awg in wire size, and the remote wire at least 12awg. it sounds like your drawing a lot of power,so smaller wires usually mean more heat...the amp will turn off into protectedmode if it gets hot or is used for along period of time,so on any road trip make sure if isnt msothered by sleeping bags, coolers etc...just like any major electronic component, it needs room to col off.

I can't find where the fuse is located at on my jl audio model e6450 so I can check and see if it's blowed are not

Amps that big are usually fused on the feed wire, under the hood of the car, near the battery.

Engine noise coming through one channel

This sounds like alternator whine. Do you have the power and ground connected to your battery, or through the accessory power? Make sure the power and ground wires are sufficient size, and connected to your battery, and make sure you have the power wire fused no more than a foot or two from the battery. If it is only on the right channely, maybe this wire is getting feedback from another wire. Seperate the wires if this is the case.

Wires create magnetic fields, and if a speaker wire is next to a power wire or something, you will hear a noise, typically high pitched whining.

My amp cuts out at higher volume

This happens to me all the time during the warm months. The problem is likely that the amplifier is overheating because of location. If not properly ventilated, the amplifier will shut off before damage occurs. Is it located under a seat or other area where sufficient air flow is lacking? I solved this problem by moving my amplifier from under a seat to the trunk area.

Jl audio 1000/1 problems

Hello l_miller36,

Depending on how much you paid for the amp on eBay, and how well you like the JL product, it may very well be worth the money to get it fixed. As for the wallet damage, you'll have to ask JL or one of their dealers. But, since the Slash2's routinely sell for over $1,000, I'd estimate the cost to be pretty high.

First, I'd send an email to JL Audio tech support and see if they have a "flat-rate" repair option or if they can give you an estimate of the repair costs. My second option would be to talk to a local car audio shop that does component level repairs. In the first case, you'd get exact replacement parts and whatever warranty JL gives on repairs. Not so with the local option, but it would most likely be less expensive.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Hooking my amp up

Sounds like it should be an easy task (fitting the sub), but you will have to make sure that the JL 8" woofer has at least 1" to 1.5" in front of it to enable the sub cone to move freely (without obstruction). JL also offers a range of "ready made" sub enclosures on thier website (including kits for Tacomas), which could give you a good idea on mounting options.

The amp and speakers came out of a boat? That should be no problem if you plan to install these components into a car. Some companies (eg: JL Audio) have specific models which enable the use of thier products in marine environments, having components less susceptible to corrosion, U.V. damage and moisture ingress than thier equivalent car audio products.

Your JL amplifier part number E6440M has "M" added to the end of it's product name denoting it is intended for marine use, however you can use the same amplifier in a car without any problems at all. The power voltages will be the same, and the signal inputs are designed exactly the same. The only difference is that the marine version will have the added benefit of less corrosion problems :)

Just to make sure that the speakers aren't damaged (from corrosion) before fittment, check the motor and magnet basket assemblies (visually) for discoloration (particularly white salty residue).. These discolorations and residues should be removed as much as possible before fittment to a car environment, so as not to cause corrosion problems to your car later on down the track.

My jl Auido 250/1 amp

You may have a bad output on the amplifier. I would recommend taking it to a local electronics repair to have fixed, or visit a local stereo shop - preferably a JL Audio dealer. Visit their website at www.jlaudio.com to find a dealer near you. You can have your amplifier sent in to JL Audio for repair by an authorized dealer and you'll get a warranty on the repair work.
