I purchased an entire system from a local dealer that included a jl audio e6450. The amp ran great for a long time until during an extended road trip it started cutting out and going into protect mode. I returned to the dealer, they replaced it and reinstalled it. I tried asking questions as to what had caused the problem but they didn't seem to have any answers and made me feel like an a-hole for asking. Once they replaced it, the amp worked fine for another month until it started cutting out again. I have it hooked up to 2-extant 10", and some infinity 6X9. Now any time I turn the volume above 20(max 34) it cuts out completly and the red protect light comes on. Somewhere in their half-hearted explanation they explained that it the wiring that was installed was cheap and that I shouldn't turn the radio up to loud. I'm a total noob, and completely naive when it comes to audio electronics. Hopefully someone on here can give me some information about the problem so I can at least be somewhat armed when I take it back in to try to get it fixed again. Thanks in advance. -K-
Take a look at the power, ground and remote wires. the power and ground should be a minimum 6awg in wire size, and the remote wire at least 12awg. it sounds like your drawing a lot of power,so smaller wires usually mean more heat...the amp will turn off into protectedmode if it gets hot or is used for along period of time,so on any road trip make sure if isnt msothered by sleeping bags, coolers etc...just like any major electronic component, it needs room to col off.
