My hp psc 500 is not a usb printer. It is attached to pc by the older, larger type printer cord--parallel port (I think). If I haven't used it in a while, when I go to print, it won't print. So I restart the computer, then it will print

I have the same problem. The printer prints fine. But, when the printer stays on for a while, it goes into power save mode. When it does that, the computer will not recognize the printer anymore, unless I restart the computer, then it works fine once again.

It's frustrating. I can't seem to find a way to turn off the power save mode on the printer, but, you might want to try and select "Factory Defaults", on the menu. That might help.

Hp printer displays offline

I resolved the problem by restarting the Print Spooler service.
Click Start/Run
Type services.msc and press enter
In the Services dialog scroll down to Print Spooler
Click to select it and Click Restart Service.
The system will stop and restart the service.
Close the dialog and check your printer again.
If this fails, leave te printer on and reboot the computer.

Hope this Helps!

Printing does not start until I restart computer

Drivers are very good. If you will go on the website and look for the firmware(not the driver) for the printer. This is the "driver" for the printer to communicate with the signals of the computer. Sometimes, it needs to be updated if the manufacturer finds they need to be more compatible with more operating systems, such as the new Vista. Hope this helps.
