While the scanner may be factory sealed, there has accumulated over time, dust, debris, or something on the inside of the glass. The scans used to be beautiful. Now there are so many dust partials on the inside of the glass that a decent scan is not possible. I don't have the hours needed to clean it up in Photoshop. Just because it is factory sealed, it does not mean that very fine dust cannot get in. If that were the case, one would have to surmise the dust was sealed in at the factory. That probably is not the case. So, how do you clean the inside of the glass?
I visited the web site below and was able to clean the glass so easily. Works great now!

Not so hard as it seems 1. Unplug the power, platen cover and USB/Firewire connections on the back of the scanner. 2. Remove the platen cover. 3. In each of the two deep slots where the platen cover hinges go there is a Philips head screw. Remove both of them. 4. VERY GENTLY lift the black cover at the rear of the scanner. There are tabs about 2 inches from each side that secure the cover. If you gently wiggle the black cover you can disengage these tabs and lift the cover off. 5. Slide the glass platen (and bezel side pieces) toward the back of the scanner until it is free from the bezel at the front of the scanner. 6. Lift it off and clean the underside and replace it using the reverse of these steps. 7. Reconnect the 3 connectors on the back and try the scanner. 8. If you have reassembled it correctly it should work like new.

Its easy. the top is held on by double sided sticky tape and two plastic tabs only.
use a small screw driver to break the tabs (located near the hinged end of scanner).
prise the edges of the plastic at the sides with a small screwdriver and slide a thin knife slowly along until they release.
remove glass and clean.!!!

Unless the warranty of your scanner has expired, you have to disassemble your scanner and clean the dust inside.

Unplug and disconnect the scanner.
Turn it over.
Using a long shanked #1 Phillips driver, remove the four recessed screws and DO NOT LOSE THEM!
Remove the bottom of the scanner and set aside.
Put a piece of black paper or black cloth between the scanner lid and the top of the glass; this will allow you to see streaks while you clean.
Using a J-cloth and non-ammoniated cleaner, wash the glass and immediately polish it with a dry j-cloth. Paper towels leave lint.
When the glass is spotless, reassemble and reinstall the scanner.
This is much easier than it sounds.

FOR CANOSCAN 800F ONLY
A part solution may be built in - called FARE and it allows you to Reduce Dust and Scratches. (think it uses IR and can slow scanning down).
You need to read the manual and adjust the settings in Advanced mode to get at this screen shot.
I just used plain, yellow paper as a test and the results are below.
Dust blob on left image, gone one on the right ie Reduce Dust and Scratches turned on (hope the site resolution shows the blob.
It wouldn't work if there was a feature of the image just where the dust is but it may help and is worth a try.
I'd still like to know how to get the case apart.

SOURCE: cleaning inside of glass scanmaker 4800
OK Just Stupid (G).... Open the lid, pull it up and off and you will see two screws below the hinges. If you have decided to purchase another scanner already, you are clear to proceed. Take these out, pry the halves apart until you hear a click. Push the upper section toward the control panel and the will come apart like a freshly caught oyster.
I would not only clean the inside of the glass, but would get a can of compressed air and blow the heck out of the area below the black thing. This should get most of the dust off of the mirrors (3).
I took mine apart and cleaned them, but, if you had problems opening the case, I definately would not try taking this assembly apart. It'll make you cuss.

I took the scanner apart. Then using a dampened eyeglass cleaning cloth, I gently cleaned the 3 internal mirrors.
No more yellow streak! :)

SOURCE: need to remove top of scanner microtek scan wizard
Follow these steps to clean the scanner :
1
Open up your scanner's lid. It does not matter if the scanner is on or off for this basic, regular cleaning.
2
Wipe down the glass surface with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth. This will remove any dust or other fine particles that have accumulated on the scanner. You should remove excess dust every day or two.
3
Scan a blank sheet of white paper into your computer and look for visible discoloration. A white sheet will provide a clean, blank slate to view the scanner's overall quality. If you notice any irregularities on the white sheet, you need to do more thorough, semi-regular cleaning.
Semi-Regular Cleaning
1
Turn off the scanner and open up the lid.
2
Spray a small amount of "mild glass cleaner" on a soft, clean cloth as recommended by Scanner-Magic.com.
3
Wipe the scanner's glass to thoroughly clean the area. You should perform this semi-regular cleaning at least every two weeks or sooner if a white sheet of paper indicates discoloration.
4
Keep the scanner's lid open for a few minutes until all excess glass cleaner has dried.

I have the same problem, the glass is fogged on the inside.
I guess is should bust it open, but it is such a good scanner.
Yes, same problem and I'd really like the answer as the inside of the glass is getting more and more 'fogged' up. Thanks in advance.
I have one about 2 years old with dust on the inside. It will cost UKĀ£ 60 to have it cleaned but this Canon UK official service & repair agent does not have clean room facilities so cannot guarantee a complete fix.
I've tried to get the case open but even having removed the screws, the two halves of the case are kept together by plastic lock tabs.
Does anyone know how to get the case apart.?
I get to see on coloured streaks on preview. the actual image is not visible instead only green, yellow red & blue streaks are visible on the preview pane. Also there light fogginess in the innerside of the glass.
The dust on the inside makes it impossible to get a clean scan. I'm not sure how to take it apart to clean the glass from the inside... and I'm sure my warranty has been expired (the dust has accumulated over 1+ year).
I have the same problem, but it's not limited to dust. There is also some kind of milky buildup on the inside of the glass. It can't be smoke, because nobody here smokes, but I'd hate to get rid of a perfectly good scanner because of this. What can be done?
Exactly the same as described by others -- dusty and smoky looking under the glass. Tried to get help from Epson (not under warranty) and was assured that this is "impossible." Guess not. Loved the scanner until this became an issue.
Same problem -- dust and smoky film on underside of glass. Epson assures me this is impossible. Guess not.
Anyone know of detailed instructions to dismantle the scanner. It was a great scanner until this happened -- really don't want to spend $$$ to replace it.
Yeah, I have the same problem with my Epson Perfection V200! Ā There are cloudy areas on the underneath side of the glass, and one area of cloudiness that is in a perfect oval shape. Ā What the heck is this, and how do you get rid of it?
yup, same problem here. my epson 4490 has a smoky film on the underside of the glass. I bought this scanner in '06, so looks like i'll either have to open it up to clean the underside or get a new one! argh.
