Certainly. Providing the system holds pressure, it can go indefinitely. Newer motor technology, in the compressor area would use significantly less energy, consider switching that out.

The freezer part of the fridge used to work so well n ice would form in a few minutes of switcfhing on the fridge. but now, ice rarely forms and ice cream simply melts. what could be the prob

Cause of that problem is a clogged in the tubing system, if your refrigerator is 5-10 years old it is a candidate for that problem. But if the refrigerator is newer, few years old then be sure the evaporator has no small hole or punctured cause by sharp object when removing frozen thing on it. Inspect it visually if you haven't found hole in evaporator then a system is clogged.
Thanks for asking.

What causes the discoloration of the freezer & refrigerator handles? Is there anything that can bring them back to the original color? Mine were bisque & are about 10 years old. Thanks Fixya!

we all get a bit discolered after 10 years.bottom line the paint sort of gets thin and worn.cheer up take them off or mask-tape them and with a little very fine sandpaper give them a little rub and repaint them to match your new and very expensive kitchen.adrian,,,,

Model HMG 21674 About how old is this model, trying to decide to repair or buy new! Thanks.

with out knowing the producton number i am showing this model to have a twelve year run
88-2000,
10 years is the expected life of most units now adays, so even if you were at the end of production
your pushing 10 years now
i would just buy new,,,, fixing one problem could only open a very exepensive can of worms

Light on refirgerator side doesn't come on unless I tap switch.

I had to take my switch apart and clean and lube it and it worked fine. Or just replace the switch. It may have gotten some sticky ketchup in it like mine did.

Stopped cooling

Hello cpuklutz
Welcome

You said, Kenmore; 21 cu ft; 10-years old; just stopped cooling; wondering if it even makes any financial sense to get estimate to repair, or is 10 years about it's trouble free length of service

Here is an article that you may find useful and interesting related to your situation.
Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thank You, HUUUM
