Smoke coming from exhaust in 1997 Saturn SL sedan

When i rev engine white smoke comes from the exhaust and there is black soot coating exhaust. has 147000 miles i just bought the car. what could be wrong please help and please say how much it would cost to fix.

Motor is not worn out at 147000 i know plenty of people with the same car that have 220000+ im hoping its not the head or head gasket and its just the ECTS (engine coolant temp sensor) is that possible?

Stop asking questions. Your just guessing & worrying yourself for no reason The car has to be properly diagnosed, you know that & you know a brand new car can break down so what other people have or had is of no value to you. You new car has problems find out what they are we have no way to know from here

What is wrong is you bought a worn out motor
with 147,000 miles
White Smoke is usually a bad head gasket
In your case it sounds like a really rich fuel condition
where you spit out a lot of fuel on start up.
I won't go into how to diagnose the many issue it
may have,it would take too long & unless you say you
have experience then only a repair shop would be your
answer to at least diagnose the issues
Just think about the cost question
Your on the internet talking or asking people
all over the world with different currency to answer
your question
You also have no idea what is wrong,so no dealer or
shop would know what the end cost will be.
There are no set prices from one shop to the next,
for anything & for good reason.
Your in charge of the education process, asking questions,
& authorizing whatever you choice to do with the car & it's
problems

SOURCE: White smoke coming out of the exhaust when starting the engine?

Its the problem of oil.The oil is getting burned out. The vehicle is either burning oil or it is moisture in the gas chamber if you notice white smoke from the exhaust. This is a common possibility.but in some cases this white smoke is not due to oil burning. In that case   White smoke from the exhaust is a symptom of coolant entering the combustion chamber. Normally this is a sign of a blown head gasket or cracked head. And  this is not a common problem must be repaired immediately. You must STOP driving this vehicle or you will cause serious engine damage. you will have to get both this possibilities checked.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

SOURCE: Nissan Sentra 2000 model. Thick White smoke coming out of exhaust

White smoke is caused by coolant or water coming out the tail pipe. There is a chance that the white smoke was caused by water splashing up from a puddle onto the exhaust pipe. Keep an eye on the coolant level in the radiator in any event.

Let us know how it goes or if the problem persists. We're looking forward to how things go for you.

SOURCE: Nissan Sentra 2000 model. Thick White smoke coming out of exhaust

Is the car runnig little rough on cold start up in themorning for few seconds?? Because I have done quite a few headgaskets on QG18 Sentra aka 1.8 liter nissan sentra. here is the test. Fill up your overflow bottle to the full mark and check the coolant level in about 5 days.(drive it normally as if nothing is going on) If the level is down, your head gasket is gone. How about the check engine light , is it on?? post results.

SOURCE: white smoke coming from exhaust when accelerating

This is usually an indication of a bad head gasket.I gasket. The white smoke is the coolant leaking out of the engine and winding up in the oil passages, due to a bad head gasket. To confirm this,
1. check oil. Is level increased, or milky appearance?
2. Is coolant level dropping, but u don't see any signs of leaks?
The above indicates a bad head gasket, causing the white smoke u describe. Let me know how u make out.

1995 Saturn engine revs up and engine runs hot and stall

I assume you mean the engine seems to idle high, quickly overheats and stalls. If that is the case, it may have a bad head gasket. To verify, check the coolant recovery bottle and look for dark engine oil floating on the coolant and/or excessive white smoke from the exhaust pipe. If neither of these symptoms are present, check the ECM for error codes - there is a chance the catalytic converter is plugged or something in the emissions system or the ECM itself has failed.

EXHAUST TROUBLE SHOOTING

If smoke is black indicates too much fuel
If smoke is white Could be coolant in the exhaust system
If smoke is blue possible excessive oil entering in the combustion system
Also if you have an automatic transmission with a vacuum modulator, it could be leaking transmission into the combustion
If you have too much oil in the engine, it will also smoke

My 1995 sl 5 speed saturn smokes really bad ,and it cuts off when i push the clutch the check engine light also comes on when it does this it seems like its only running on 2 cylinders

If the smoke is thick and white you have a blown head gasket. The car would basically look like it is making clouds.

If the smoke is black that is too much fuel and is likely the result of a failed ignition module.

I have a nissan wingroad and theres always soot in the rear exhaust outlet and she doesnt smoke even when i rev

soot is normal to be seen in the rear exhaust outlet, as long as it's black soot. If the engine doesn't burn oil excessively, then this is nothing to be worried about.
