Battery door won't stay closed on Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S90 Digital Camera

The battery door latch is most likely damaged/broken. Try using a piece of duct tape to keep it closed. I've done this on several cameras with battery door latch issues & the doors stayed shut just fine.

Shutter will open but not close

Sounds like the camera is not getting battery current, since that is how it will act without batteries. Does the meter needle respond to changing light when switched on? If not, check battery polarity -- the + end touches the strip at the bottom of the battery compartment, the - end touches the battery cap. If that all checks out right, one of the wires connecting the battery compartment to the innards may be corroded or loose.

My digicam won't start

There could be a couple of reasons why your camera would not start.

Before considering it to be defective, verify that the camera has batteries inside and that these batteries are charged. To do this:

  1. Locate and open the battery compartment.
  2. Identify the type of batteries needed and purchase new ones OR
  3. Recharge the batteries with the recharger provided.
  4. Place the new/charged batteries inside, closing the battery compartment.
  5. Try to turn on the camera.
If the camera still doesn't work after verifying that the batteries are in order, remove the memory card and any other accessories that the camera may have and try turning it on again.

If still the camera won't turn on, one last step can be performed if and only if your camera uses standard batteries (AA or AAA). If this step is performed incorrectly, you could short circuit the batteries, which would discharge them. This procedure will not damage the camera if performed correctly. Please pay attention and do exactly as explained:
  1. Locate and open the battery compartment.
  2. Remove the batteries.
  3. Place the batteries back inside in the opposite direction than the one indicated. If the position indicated is for the positive end first, place the battery with the negative end first. Do this process for all the batteries.
  4. Close the battery compartment.
  5. Attempt to turn on the camera. It will not turn on, but this step is necessary nonetheless.
  6. Open the battery compartment.
  7. Remove the batteries.
  8. Place the batteries in the correct position according to the indication.
  9. Close the battery compartment.
  10. Attempt to turn on the camera.
If the camera still does not work, it is likely that it is defective. At this point you should take the camera to an authorized service center.

Compartment door will not shut properly, camera will come on

Drill 2 tiny holes, large enough to insert thin paper clip wire. One hole is drilled in the battery compartment door, close to the sidewall but in between the 2 adjacent batteries.
Drill second hole in battery case by first peeling back the ruberized coating slighty. This hole should be adjacent or sighted in line with the first hole. In each case, allow enough in tact plastic door or case so that it can withstand the pressure of a tightened piece of wire. Insert batteries. Then insert wire carefully tto penetrate both holes. Press down hard on battery compartment door and carefully twist the 2 ends of the inserted paper clip wire to secure the compartment door tightly. The one drawback is that each time you wish to change batteries, you will have to follow the above procedure.Don't know of any recalls on this condition.

Broken battery compartment door switch

The switch is a micro switch that is depressed(and not sad :)) by a plastic tag moulded on the battery cover. Once the cover is moved into position and closed, the tag presses on the micro switch closing the switch and thus removing the error message. As with any switch, a switch is simply open or closed, Open = high resistance or O/L, while closed = 0 ohms reistance. You can use a small wire to overcome the switch by soldering the wire to both tags of the switch so it is permenantly 0 ohms. This will send a message to the microprocessor that cover is closed and camera ready for use. Hope this helps.

Battery compartment

Your camera needs to be sent in for service. I would advise calling Canon for free tech support.
