SOURCE: How to unlock the case on WD Home Edition
Hi,
I have opened a few of these and they are tricky but it can be done. You will need 2-4 flat screwdrivers or if you have them paint can openers work even better.
THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL VOID ALL WARRANTY ON YOUR DRIVE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Wedge 1 of the drivers into the seam near the top of the back of the drive and pry inward until the upper latch releases, then pry up about 3mm to release the clip, repeat at the bottom of the same edge leaving that driver in it's place.
Now, either leave them in or slide that side back about 2mm to prevent the latches from relocking. Then repeat on the other side.
Once all four latches have released wrestle the pages from the binding(think book) as if tearing the pages out of a binder. It's a tough seal but will pull apart slowly.
Once you've removed the shell, you will see the drive mounted on a cage, with 2 circuit boards attached, remove the screws and boards first, then remove the 4 screws from the HDD and it will pull free.
Once it's out, it's just an ordinary internal 3.5" SATA drive and should fit and connect into any standard(current) desktop.
Hope this helps FixYa,
Chris

Hello,
You can surely do that but since there will be no Operating System to boot from, you will need a bootable third party software that can give you an environment where you can view your hard disk and copy things from it. An example is Hiren Boot CD's mini XP and Winternal's ERD Commander. You then set your PC to boot from CD in the bios setup.
All the best.

If you got a USB casing for that, it would have come with a USB and power cable. Yes, power too!
Plug the power, and make sure you have a USB 2.0 hi-speed port. Also check "computer management" and check the hard disk works.
