It really depends on the software that you are trying to install the key on.
Here are some things you might look for:
CD/DVD case back (usually at the bottom of the case)
Look on the information sheet that came with the software.
Try typing the KEY that is already on the CD/DVD itself.
If this is the key it will accept it.
As a last resort I would look on the CD/DVD as you install it or open the files. Some of these programs are now printing the key in a file that is on the disc. Usually under the file name README
If that doesn't work let me know the name of the software and I will try further.

I think, based on my own experiences, Restaurant Pro Express just plain sucks, this issue happens to me all the time, but I had to pay tech support regardless. Every time my router fails, I have to reauthorize the software, which means I waste 1-2 hours on hold with their so called tech support.
Do not buy this software. Restaurant Pro Express is a mistake.
