Go into the menu that shows the lips and select a TTS voice (text to Speech) like, Jill or Jack.

SOURCE: How do you get GArmin nuvi 265WT to speak street names?

I just purchased similar model (Nuvi 265W) and experiment for sometime. The trick is on the language option with or without TTS.

Select Setting from menu, go to language and pick the Voice option. Select any one of the language with TTS (Text to Speech) and save. Those that without (TTS) will not talk "street name", this is why some cheaper model can't speak street name, only turn-by-turn instruction, like nuvi model 205.

Enjoy

SOURCE: I have a Nuvi 255. It does not speak street names

Did you select Text To Speech (TTS) one?  If the voice doesn't have (TTS) it won't speak street names.

SOURCE: Garmin 265 W won't speak street names

Hi,

Below is the procedures for setting the languages...

Touch tools > settings > language > voice.

Voice- changes the language for voice promts.
Languages noted with a persons name are (tts)
text to speak voices.

which have an extensive vocabulary and pronounce
the street names as you approach turns.

The pre-recoreded voices (those without a persons name)
have a limited vocabulary and (do not speak names of locations or streets)

Text language- change all on-screen text to the selected language,
changing the text language does not change the language of user entered data
or map data, such as street names.

Keyboard- select the keyboard for your language,
you can also change the keyboard language mode from any keyboard
by touching the mode button

Adjusting the volume levels
From the "menu" page touch "volume"
to adjust the volume.

To adjust the volume levels for the media player
and the navigation prompts,
please click.

Tools > settings > Volume > Restore
Restore will, restore to origional volume levels.

Richard

The Nuvi 255W is capable of TTS (text-to-speech) and speaking street names. Please see this link on how to set the unit up to speak street names:

If the Garmin Nuvi Gps has suddenly quit speaking street names and now only says "Turn Left" or Turn Right", please follow the following procedure to restore your Nuvi so that it will begin speaking street names again:

Press the wrench/tools button at the main menu. Select the icon with the lips (language/locale).

You should see (2) buttons labeled American English. The first one makes all of the text on the Nuvi in the English alphabet. The second button is for the voice. If it just says "American English", then it will only say "Turn Left" or "Turn Right". Press this button and select a TTS voice (Text to Speech), like Jill, Jack, Daniel.....etc. That will give you back your street names.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 265w and it stopped saying street names. How can i get it to say street names again?

From your main menu, tap tools>settings>language. On this page under voice, select a voice and make sure it has the TTS next to the voice for speech. If you do not have any, you need to download garmin webupdater from http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Download install and run garmin webupdater and follow the onscreen prompts. When you get to the additional updates page, scroll down to find the voice and update the ones you would like on your unit. Once the update is complete unplug your unit and allow it to restart. Then go back to tools>settings>language and select your voice.

The Garmin Nuvi 265 does not speak the name of the street I am turning into. It says "turn Left" but not "Turn Left into James Street". Can this feature be switched on? Also it tells...

Check to make sure that the voice you selected has TTS (Text To Speech) after the name, this will speak the street name, otherwise it is just a generic right or left.

How do make the gps announce the street name to

Neither the Nuvi 250W nor the Nuvi 205W have Text to Speech (which is the feature that allows the unit to speak the street names), so you cannot make yours speak street names. I'm sorry.

Garmin nuvi 750 won't say street names after upgrade to 2009 maps

User's manual available at www.garmin.com. Select "support", then "Manuals". Enter "mobile electronics"+"automotive"+"model #". Manual says that selecting a language with a person's name will speak street names.
