Need Help! Ok - we just tried to hook up our new OKI Microline 590 - and when we print an order it screws the characters up a lot. Bigger and smaller, - adds lines we don't need and takes up space. How do you set it to all print at the same font?
We are on a network - it prints the data that we send to it. But the font pitch and stuff goes crazy - some big. I just want to set the font so what we print orders and invoice wise stays on one single page and not look all crazy. We are on a network - it prints the data that we send to it. Sounds like driver problems. Cant solve problems without details like what opperating system, what driver, how it the printer attached, usb, paralel, network? Will it print a test page from the driver ok?

Re-install the printer ribbon. It's probably slipping or dragging on the head mechanism, and the printer synchronization control is slowing everything down to compensate.
disconnect the LPT cable, and try a usb cable, the wierd printing should stop while the cable is disconnected. I'll be willing to bet there is something trying to print or poll the printer from the computer. that is causing the random characters. check to see that there are no other printers configured g to print/connect to same LPT1 port, from an old printer installation. (thus switching to the USB cable). Be also sure to download the latest drivers for your operating system for the OKI, from OKI's website
Oki printers are known for boards going bad even from static discharge from your hands. More than likely you have blown the main board. I have replaced way too many Oki main boards, if you like the printer, replace the board. Otherwise get a lexmark line printer.
Try to perform an offline test print using your printer alone
To do this, power off your printer first
Press and hold the LF/FF button on the printer panel then power on. The printer will perform its own printing ( lines of pattern )
If it does it without problems ( no MENU lights came on ) the printer should be OK. If not try replacing the printer main control board.
The drivers should be on the company website, if these are not working for you the generic text driver in Windows will work for text only printing. If you do graphics or formatted invoices, etc. on the printer Epson and Okidata both make pretty generic print drivers that should work for a microline printer.
