Does wifi require a router? What is the difference between a router and a cable modem? I have activated a network connection, but I don't know how to activate wifi to use my browsers.
Modem- connects to incoming cable or phone line, it creates a connection between the internet your computer or other internet using items.
Router- splits up the connection to the internet to share it with multiple computers, TV's, cell phones, ect. Can be wired or wireless (wifi)
Wifi- wireless connection, it's always a router too because multiple devices work with it.
Now here's the confusing part, you can get any combination in one modem.
Cable modem, no router, no wifi, just hooks up to one wired device.
Cable modem, with router, no wifi, usually can hook up to 4 wired devices.
Cable modem, with router, with wifi, can have 1 to 4 wired devices and has wifi which can connect to hundreds of devices.
You can also get Cable modems with phone connections they use the internet service to connect to the phone system.
To activate the wifi, you usually need one computer to change the settings to set a name and password for your wifi. Then all your other devices will have to be connected to that named signal and use that password to set them up.
