Although the fan may cause a problem, the unit should achieve better than the results you have described even with a failed fan. Check the voltage to the fan to see if it has actually failed or is merely not being supplied with electricity. If no power to it - if you can identify the voltage of the fan (should be written on the fan somewhere) you should be able to wire it directly to power to test if it works and if so if it makes a big enough difference. Most likely the compressor motor has either partially failed (The humming noise) or you need the refrigerant gas topped up and the unit checked for leaks. You cannot legally do this yourself, so call in a refrigeration guy. First thing to try yourself is to defrost the unit completely (at least overnight if empty and open). Ice crystals can sometimes form in the refrigerant gas causing similar symptoms, although this is probably not the problem, it is free to try so worth doing if you haven't already. Hope this helps :)

I had the same thing happen to ours, and it turned out that there was too much dust (and a piece of paper) caught underneath and behind the refrigerator. It was restricting airflow, and not allowing the compressor to work right. What you need to do is get underneath it (empty the refrigerator/freezer and tilt it back) and get everything out from under it - down to the last dust bunny. Do the same for the back. Then find the fans and make sure nothing's caught in them. I know, it sounds too simple, but I almost guarantee that's your problem.

Guess I got lucky with ours.

I know it took at least an hour before there was a noticeable difference in temperature after we did that. Is the hum from the fans on the back and/or bottom? If they're running well, then about the only likely remaining cause would be the compressor. That's a bit more expensive to replace though.

You'll need to replace the fan, or have it replaced.

If you want to give it a try yourself, you can find instructions here:

I didn't know which fan it was that was out, so I linked you to the listing of repair tutorials they have.

Good luck, and if you need anything else, just ask. If you need a part number, give me your refrigerator model and I can probably find the part number. Though it might be faster to call a local repair shoppe to get that information.
