Dell optiplex gx280 won't boot up

I installed a new 650 watt power supply in my dell gx280 and now when i turn it on it says no boot device available, i also temporarily took out the floppy drive to get at a part in case that's the problem, cause i know that the floppy drive is part of the boot process. but that doesn't make any sense because my computer has booted fine for years with no disk in the floppy drive

note,i assume that it boots off the hard drive but the hard drive appears as un-identified in the boot sequence so any tips to fix this would be really apreciated

  • darthrex354 Apr 01, 2009

i tried telling the system not to check for floppy drive at start up, this didn't change the message, thats why i think it might be the hard drive, thank you for your help

  • darthrex354 Apr 01, 2009

thank you, i figured out that my hard drive was not plugged in, dumb mistake i know but i've never swapped out the power supply before so i guess it counts as a learning experience

Your computer's hard drive is not being detected. Double-check your connections. You can go into the BIOS and tell it not to check for a floppy at start up, or you can simply plug the floppy back in. It is possible but unlikely the missing floppy is the problem, the computer should search for other boot devices if it does not find one it is expecting.

You either have the boot priority in the bios off or you have improperly cabled your hard drive . perhaps you set it to boot to cd while installing the operating system and forgot to change the order back.
The floppy drive does not have to be present for the system to boot (if set to "not installed" in bios)
your boot devices are your cd/dvd rom and your harddrive.
Seeing as you've recently replaced the power supply , ime assuming you didnt dismantle the whole computer , just the power leads coming from the power supply, which means you only moved power , not data cables.
This would be the first thing to check -- power to the harddrive and cd rom, the 4 pin connector that sometimes connects to the motherboard and any data cables you might have bumped while changing the power cables. check these things and post here again.
Regards

I'm no expert, but maybe my experience will help someone. I had this same problem- replaced the PSU in my Optiplex GX280 Mini Tower and got the "No boot Device" message. I found that I had to go into set up and check the drive settings- the hard drive and cd rom drive were set to off. I don't know if switching out the PSU caused the change- or maybe because I also changed the battery, but my suggestion is Check your drive settings!

There may not be something wrong with the hard drive!! These computers were like school computers they used to boot off of a network system. You' ll have to go into bios' put your operating system disk in and boot it off of the disk, It's complicated and i know it' blunt but this is what happened to mine. I was pissed I spent 320 bucks on mine a nd thought it was broke. Turns out that's all i needed to do.

Dear sir! my dell optiplex gx 150 won't start when i press the power button but power supply will be start and pc can't give any beep ?

try to remove the power cable on that product and then hold the power button for 8 secs. Reinsert back the power cable and press the power button. If it won't turn on, then the power supply is the main cause of trouble. Contact dell right away for repair...

Optiplex gx820 can i connect 300 watt power supply

You listed GX820 and GX260.

I am assuming you meant the GX260.

There are three varieties of the Gx260.

1) The SFF (Small Form Factor) power supplies can be replaced, but I know of no upgrades for these.

2) For the SDT (Small Desk Top), you can get up to a 270 (best I have seen).

Example of where to get one.

For the Mini Tower, here is an example of a 400W replacement. There may be others for this model.

I have a GX280 Mini Tower and recently upgraded my PSU to one very similar to the one above.

I recently purchased a Dynex 400 watt atx power supply for my Dell optiplex gx280 (slim form). The reason I did this is I have a new PNY geforce 8400 GPU and my old power supply is only 160 watts (1/2 the...

Sounds like the power supply is not compatible with the motherboard. If the motherboard can't support a 400 watt powers supply you will either get a blinking light or nothing at all. Those optiplex's use a proprietory power supply because of the pin connectors and how a power supply is supposed to fit in there. If you can't find a 400 watt power supply that fits then get a hold of Dell and see if they sell one for that computer.

I there a replacement for a gx280 SFF powersupply?

Your best bet is to take the power supply out and take it to a good electronics store that has decent computer hardware. That way, you can compare the connections available and also its mounting style to make sure it will work.

Dell Optiplex GX280 - On power ON , no Fan movement no display

Confirm no leaking or bulging capacitors on your mothboard.
refer to here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague

As this was a common problem with the GX280.
If found, you will need to replace the capacitors.

The other check is to make sure the heatsink is fitted correctly, perhaps reaply the thermal paste if you have any. I know that high temps would switch the GX280 off.

Dell optiplex gx280 makes loud fan sound at startup and enters windows screen, but will not finish booting and freezes up.

You may have a problem with your power supply(the loud fan noise) and eventually it may get too hot and will cause problems like not fully booting.

Dell Optiplex GX280 Video Card Install Problem

You hit that one right on the dot.  ATI website showed the specs for that graphics card you installed as needing a 300 Watt power supply.  Good news though... I researched newegg.com and I believe I found your 300W power supply.  There are 4 different Optiplex gx280 designs with 4 completely different power supplies.  Since you bought the low-profile video card, I believe you have the slim computer case and this power supply should work for you...

Updrading power supply of Dell Optiplex GX280 Small Desktop.

Hi there.
No, 400Watts will not affect your computers performance, it just means that you will be able to add more peripheral devices to your PC, for example, an external or internal hard drive or more USB devices.
Make sure you get the power supply from Dell themselves as you will find it difficult to install a standard PSU (power supply unit).

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!
