spin the drive shaft back an forth, if it has play then its your universal joints, also lift drive shaft up and down near the the bearing and see if there's play there as well.
This is an easy repair if you've ever soldered and would not be too costly for a repair shop to do it for you. The problem is a bad Vertical Output IC (usually mounted on an aluminum heat sink with the part on it labeled LA78?? ) and 1 or 2 bad capacitors. Some times you can even fix the problem by re-soldering the contacts of the IC- To find the IC follow the 4 wires that come from the Yoke (which is a contained coil of wires slipped over the neck of the picture tube(s)) back to the board. 2 of the wires go to the horizontal o/p and 2 to the Vertical o/p the thinner gauge wires are for the vertical. Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!
I just bought the exact same model this weekend that I found used in the classifieds. The person who sold it to me said it worked, but when I got it home and hooked it up, it did exactly what yours did, even with no laundry in it. It would get to the spin cycle and start banging around violently like it had a brick in it. I even used an electronic level to make sure it wasn't uneven on the floor. From doing a little research on the web, i read that the suspension could have gone faulty. I took it out and set it up in my garage and hooked a hose up to the cold to see it run a small cold water load with the back panel off so I could observe what was going on inside. From what I observed, the suspension springs were sprung and some worse than the others. I am going to order a replacement set from Sears tomorrow and replace them to see if the unbalanced problem goes away. Removing them is a cinch and should take about a half hour to do all four and put everything back together. I will let you know if my unbalance problem goes away.
You have identified the problem when you pulled the drive shaft and the shake was gone. So you know it is between the tranny and the rear end. If it is not the universal joints, then you have a warped drive shaft.
Oh good, two people. I was getting weary of attempting to slightly change my answer for all the other people who didn't use the "has the same problem" feature. Anyway, the problem both of you have is not too far gone yet, but will get worse if you let it. It's the main capacitors. Maybe not all 21, but probably at least half of the 21 main caps are shot. All should be replaced at any rate. Any shop worth it's salt ought to be able to do this for you for under $400 if you can't do this yourself.
If this set uses a picture tube then your problem may be in the vertical deflection circuit. Also an unstable power supply will cause this problem.
Stargazer
his is the vertical circuit going bad. you willl need a repairman for this. unless you can solder?
a cost of repair might range around 400.00
