Im having the same problem. Just out of the blue after packing it in suitcase for air travel. It was well packed in padding and shows no damage. I turn on the camera snap pic and then get the ERR 01 message and the picture is not saved. camera will not let me do anything after that message. I can only turn it off and start again.... You didn't say which shooting mode you're using, but I'd bet you're in Manual mode and have dialed in a completely wrong aperture/shutter speed combination for bright lighting conditions. For example, 1/60th of a second and f2.8 in bright sunlight would be "burning out" your image, so the camera may be giving you an error message. Try using AUTO or PROG setting and see if the problem persists. If it does, try a different lens. You may have an incompatible mount, or one of the contacts may be damaged. If all else fails, try your lens on another Canon camera.
So, have you cleaned the contacts? Remove the lens and using a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol, clean the contacts on the lens and the camera body where they meet.
Check that the pins in the camera that connect to the CF card are clean and not bent. You will probably need a good light and a magnifying glass to see into the card slot. If you can see a pin that is bent you could try straigtening it. BEWARE- turn off camera and use a non conducting "stick" ie cocktail or toothpick. Not sure for a Canon but a colleague paid £40 for a new pin assembly for a Nikon with similar problem.
Hope this helps.
I can help you fix the BUSY Error or Error 99 of your Canon EOS Rebel XS .
Installation of this Canon EOS Rebel XS firmware version 1.06 update will solve these problems:
Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the BUSY indication remains lit in the viewfinder.
The message, "Err 99 Shooting is not
possible. Turn the power switch to<OFF> and <ON> again or
re-install the battery", appears on the camera's LCD monitor, and after
the above operation is carried out,the LCD monitor displays in a
language that is different from the actual language setting.

In my case, I borrowed a camera and when I got it back, err 05 appears.
I've located a bit of old orange juice which sticked one of the sensors
- you can see the sensors when flash is popped out.
