Vitamixer 5000 leaks oil on the bottom of the container. Oil is not shooting up from the base of machine - so I know it's in the container. One time it also smelled like smoke so I turned it off. I haven't had this issue for a month and now today I leaked again. Where is the oil coming from? Do I need to re-oil it somewhere? What's happening? Thanks

The blades seem to be turning OK - so stiff moving blades is not the problem.

Thanks Ross - I have not done anything with it yet except use it less - which is a bummer!

Here in NZ the blade assembly and bearings come as a single unit and are not overly cheap. I would use it as much as I wanted and when the problem extends beyond just a bit of the grease coming out I would do my replacement then. There are wet and dry blades available depending on what you are going to be blending.

We only have the wet blade. I was afraid it would not be cheap. Haven't used it lately so don't know if it still gets oil on the container when using. It's either oil or grease.

Replace the blade assembly, it comes complete with the bearings which is where the grease is coming from.

SOURCE: I have a Vitamix Super

Hello.
There is a bearing that sometimes slips, causing the main shaft the "black thing" connect to, to drop, making the base of the black thing touch the housing of the motor base. This is caused when placing the container on the blender base, and the downward pressure on the shaft sometimes cause it to slip. A quick possible fix for this is to try and lift the shaft up without damaging the thread the black adapter connects to. lift the shaft with a pair of pliers approx 3-4mm, while lifting the shaft look to the base of shaft to see if you can see a bearing of clip moving with the shaft. (move the shaft up and down to see if anything attached to it is moving up and down) This needs to be pushed down while the shaft is pulled up. it can be done with a flat screwdriver or another pair of needle nose pliers. Be careful not to pull the shaft up to high or the container will not sit on the blender correctly.
You can lubricate the bearing also at the base of the shaft with a few drops of sewing machine oil.
Also if this bearing has worn too much moisture can get into the electrical motor itself, causing corrosion in the windings and bearings, eventually leading to a complete failure. Unfortunately this can not be reversed and would need to a replaced. The sign of white smoke is a sign of this, but is also caused by the plastic rubbing. It could be either.
I hope this helps you in time for Easter! Happy Holidays Regards GM

Have had my Vita-mix 5000 for several years with no problems. Now, it leaks oily, black liquid around the base, and jerks erratically when the blender is set on the lowest setting (#1 of 10)/variable.

Is it getting hot when you operate it? If you run a mixer for a long
time, the motor will get very warm. On the older units, when the
motor overheats, the various parts of the motor and its container
may start to melt. Mixer motors are not designed to last forever and
a replacement motor may be available from the manufacturer.
Another way is to purchase another similar mixer as you can on
eBay and swap parts.

I need to replace the speed control potentiometer. How do I open the case on this machine?

Hi there. I know you were looking for an answer 5 months ago. I didn't see the correct procedure listed. My speed control just bit the dust. Anyway, here goes: Pull off the rubber cover where the container sits. You'll see 4 phillips screws, unscrew them (you can leave them in place). Next, on the black drive wheel in the center, look to find a small triangle molded into the outside of the ring. Line it up with a small slotted opening just under the drive wheel. Use a small allen wrench which fits in and unscrews a set screw. You can lift off the drive wheel. Now you have to pull the top off. On mine, it took some time as I was trying to be careful not to break anything. With persistence the top will separate from the base. My super 5000 has a 2 wire speed control knob. Hope this helps if you haven't gotten an answer elsewhere or taken it to the shop.

Blender container leaks even though gasket is in place

Hey, I know this is an old thread but just had the same problem and solved it. With the blender container upside down, place the gasket on the jar hole, put the blade through the hole on top of the gasket, then screw the plastic base on top of that.

The way I had done it before was to pop the blade into the bottom of the plastic base first then screw it onto the gasket and jar but it goes on the gasket, not under the bottom of the base. Hope that helps anyone else in the future.

Also just read the manual instructions like I didn't, clear as day right there but I never bothered to read them ha

Oil Leak-Stand mixer

Leaking of oil in a stand mixer is not necessarily indicative of a large problem.

Kitchenaid stand mixers are overpacked with oil to last the lifetime of the motor. If the motor sits idle for some time (is not used), the oil may begin to drip from the gears and settle. Oil leakage may primarily be seen from around the beater shaft or planetary action.

A stand mixer can lose up to a 1/4 cup of oil before it needs to be serviced.

It is recommended to run the mixer on speed 10 for 2 minutes in order to redistribute oil back into the motor. In order to prevent future occurences, this is recommended to be done every 3 weeks if mixer is not being used.
