The dvd drive (TS_L532L) in my Toshiba Satellite laptop does not work. The operating system is XP home. It wll not burn dvd's or read regular CD's either. The programs I use (sonic, intervideo) all say please insert a disk in drive when there is already one in the tray. The disk brand is imation. Hope you can help. Thanks
Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard
if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.
hope this helps you

Ok this type of thing is very common ... however often we chase our tails looking for a software fix when often it's the DVD/CD itself.. so to find out either way weather the device is FUNCTIONAL, download "CopytoDVD" here www.snapfiles.com/get/copy2dvd.html This has it's own ASPI recording layer... and if your DVD is FUNCTIONAL... then it WILL burn ya DVD... however if the DVD is, as I suspect, .. kaput! then it will NOT burn a DVD.. that's basically how we would "Test" Functionality. So if it works then ya all good.. else ya gonna haveta get a new DVD.

Hi
Thanks for quick reply. I downloaded what you said and when I click burn to disk, it says "please insert media to continue", but there is already a disk in the drive. I was thinking of purchasing another brand of dvds to see if that would help. Any ideas?
Thanks
